Oh, that would stop the Klingons... along with taking out most of their ship...

The Defiant Class, don't know why, I just have always liked it for some reason...

Star Trek of old was a good influence I think. As has been said, the stories tended to focus on moral and social issues and were often resolved with clear consequences. If I had my way, TNG at the very least, would be made a compulsory part of the National Curriculum. Alas, that will likely never happen.

The new movie was entertaining but it did seem to lack depth in conversation in favour of "BOOOM BOOOM PEW PEW PEW!".

As for Transporters being impossible, I'm recalling news articles that I read a while back about a team of scientist who HAVE managed to transport matter over distance, albeit a single particle, but hey; it's a start!

Probably because it's a bitch in battle and takes crap from no-one.

This was all part of JJ abrams attempt to help Star Trek appeal to a broader audience. I dont necessarily agree with his methodology but it is a noble cause... droning on and on about intergalactic politics only appeals to the most die hard fans... and even they tire of it eventually. Lets face it, I enjoy a great Trek plot as much as you do but everyone enjoys BOOOM PEW PEW!!!

Abrams tried to make this movie appeal to everyone, was this a mistake maybe. But if you want Star Trek fans for the future then that what you need to do. If you nitpick at everything in the movie compared to TOS then you won't like it. You have to look at the movie as a whole, and it has to stand on it's own merits. If it was made exactly like TOS, then what would be the point in making it. I think Abrams did a good enough job making this movie appeal to the die hard fans, those who are occasional watchers, and people who have never watched Star Trek before. That is something that is not easy to do...sure it has flaws and may not be correct in some things, but overall it gives an enjoyable experience.

That may have something to do with it...  :shifty:

Defiant is the tough little ship that will rip your throat out if you try to scratch its paint.  It's cool because in battle it's less of a vulnerable lumbering giant like a Galaxy (the bigger they are...)  Star Trek 2009 could really use some more logical plot devices, hopefully there will be a remake that makes some sense while preserving the action (if the mining ship would be just a little less uber effective vs. a Starfleet ship it could actually make a longer, more interesting battle.) I might watch such a remake once or twice.

MY SHIP WOULD BE THE OLD , OUT DATED, BUT A GOODIE AMBASSADOR CLASS ARM HER WITH A ROMULAN DISRUPTOR UNDER THE SAUCER, THEN INCREASE HER PHASER ARRAY TO 100,000 TERRA WATTS, THEN ARM HER WITH MULTIPLE COLBALT LAUNCHING PLATFORMS. AH BUT OF COURSE THE CLOAKING DEAVICE.
