Meaner would imply stronger, but maybe that's just my interpretation. I wouldn't consider Structural Integrity in a comparison; the only Intrepid we've seen take damage is one with plot armor.

Intrepids have a smaller profile, but get hit just as easily (did Voyager actually dodge anything? It's supposed to have the best pilot, yet draws weapons to itself constantly).

Intrepids are good intel gatherers (not that Voyager ever gathered anything except what any Starfleet ship does), but isn't much of an explorer.

Starfleet Science is the division that controls research and science, just like Starfleet Command and Starfleet Medical. It has nothing to do with Starship science labs.

The Intrepid is a 'Speedster', the Galaxy is 'The Mario' (check TVTropes).

Heh, I guess I mean't 'Leaner,' but maybe meaner still applies!  Regarding plot armour, I wanted to see how much damage a fleet-ops Intrepid would do to a Fleet-ops Galaxy (base stats for both, no Vets)

I urge anyone who doubts these shots to conduct their own versions of this (I sent them off to the edges of the screen and commanded them both to attack one-another, which occurred simultaneously.  In the end.. I mean... it still had 20% shields!  The Galaxy missed a bunch of shots, which is what I think was the deciding factor.

If FO terms, that was kinda one-sided. Both use Photons for Heavy weapons, but the Galaxy is a Battleship and the Intrepid has stronger Photons (plus the Risner one has stronger Phasers). The fact that Photons do more damage to a Galaxy, but less to an Intrepid probably didn't help the Galaxy much...

The Galaxy has stronger shields and hull and longer range, but the other factors make that a moot point at rank1.

Weird, until I went digging around the Hitchiker's guide.  Somebody was definitely playing favourites when they assigned the passives:

INT: "Autonomous Defense AI: This vessel is equipped with a special computer core that allows it to remodulate weapon and shield systems while in battle to optimize defense against standard vessels at medium range (by 31%)..."

GAL:  "Tactical Weapon Arrays: A special group of micro-processors have been added to the weapon control to increase the effectiveness against tactical long-range targets (by 50%). The defense systems had to be weakened, increasing the damage received from short range assault crafts (by 23%)."

Ouch.  Maybe tomorrow I'll try a VOY Vs. ENT (Veterans).  If nothing else, its an excuse to take some more screenshots.

At veteran, the Galaxy would probably win. The damage/accuracy would still be in effect, but the Photons would ignore the Intrepids shields. It would only have 264HP, instead of the normal 1147 or the Galaxy's 2080.

Yeah in cannon a refit Galaxy would pwn an Intrepid.

Professor J wrote:I'd take an intrepid.  Its more advanced, sleeker, faster, meaner.  It feels like something they would give to a more experienced officer... after they were done training on a certain other big-bulk cruiser, which would be handy while the were still inexperienced and learning to issue orders effectively so as not to NEED to sponge that much fire.  (assuming they didn't blow the damned thing up, or crash it after one or two torpedo messed up the star-drive)

Notably, they actually give the little quick things to less experienced officers.  A light ship can be captained by a Commander, while a big ship is captained by a Captain.  In the US Navy, the very largest ships get admirals, or at least used to.

The reasoning is simple.  To manuver that bulk in combat requires a great deal of experience.  If you misjudge, it'll take too long to correct the mistake, unlike in a fast ship.  Beyond that, they'd rather not put the ridiculous firepower in the hands of the new guy.

In the US Navy  The only thing a Admiral commands is a Battle group/ Fleet or a desk :p the Captain still commands the ship The Admiral is just there because the Carrier is his Flag as its the biggest ship and has all the nice big C@C center  back in day when the BB's will still around Captains still commanded them and an Admiral would only be there if the ship was the Flagship of a fleet.

In Trek we have seen Admirals take control over a single ship usually for a good reason or  sometimes to satisfy ego or just be a jerk. I could see an Admiral in command of a very BIG ship on a long term deep space mission like what my Odyssey and Gojira classes are meant for.

In Trekdom we see that usually the bigger the ship the more prestigious command of it is.  Riker getting command of a Luna class instead of a Nebula, Galaxy, or Sovie was his punishment for turning down several command offers and losing the E-D to a 20+ Year old BOP.

As for Intrepid being superior to a Galaxy  maybe an Intrepid under a good captain could best a  Flight 1 stock Galaxy but it would not best a refitted Galaxy or a Flight II (Venture refit)  if I wanted command of good Cannon fighting ship thats not a big bruiser Id probably pick an Akira or a Prometheus

Well, what happens if the Intrepid gets a refit too?

We haven't really seen one though, yet anyways, except for...  that one...

In fact, I've changed my mind.  I don't want an Intrepid, I want that,  Bad.

Join one of the Terran Empire's from the novels then, I'm sure they'll love the design.

Galaxy-X will slaughter any Intrepid refit in 5 seconds.

I wonder...   Ah well, for now, since this is the fleet-ops forum, its best to just focus on that, and not to be carried away with wishful thinking.  Fleet-ops forum, and baby, fleet-ops game-physics!

I think it's time to let this topic go to sleep.

I see one flaw in your logic; this is not the FO area, it's the general Star Trek area. The FO is one section down.

On a side-note: I hate that disgusting image.
