Battleshship isn't just a name, their specs come into it. Worf called Enterprise one based on those. Memory Alpha says the Ambassador was a Heavy Cruiser in its prime, I generally tend to trust that site. 9 out of 10 times, it tends to be quite reliable.
First ship designed specifically for battle and nothing else is slightly different. Most Starfleet ships are designed for war, only as a secondary focus.

in real life that is so. but even nowadays the line is blurred, and huge guns dont matter. a clever missile or plane strike will sing a huge floating castle.
by battleship, heavy cruiser, cruiser, destroyer etc we are just distinguishing between relative combat capability.
the defaint is a battleship in fleetops lol even thought it is small.
by calling the ambas a battleship when it was new i am referring to the fact that it was the most combat capable ship when it was built.
by the time of the galaxy it was now a heavy cruiser. by now its just a medium/heavy cruiser.

Well, medium. But that's just a technicallity. Not that it's a FO thing, with it being a battleship in canon too.

So are you just going with an informal 'in relation to others' thing, rather than an actual battleship like the Defiant? I was going with it starting out classed as a Heavy Cruiser, like the way Defiant is classed as an Escort.

Unless you mean how it is in code, it isnt by any means.
We see a defiant attack a battleship (a true one) on two occasions.
Occasion one: USS Valiant. Result: Lots of guest actors killed off.
Occasion two: USS Defiant in first contact. Result: Shot to hell, left adrift when USS Enterprise beamed it's crew off.
At most, the defiant is a advanced light cruiser, or heavy destroyer. Calling it an 'escort' is just euphemism, pure and simple.

Defiant is a Battleship in canon, just like in the game. It has the weapons, hull and shields you'd expect from one of the most powerful vessels in the Alpha Quadrent.
That was a Dominion Dreadnought attacked by a crew of cocky cadets in a pre-damaged Defiant.
That was a Borg Cube, being shot to hell is the most logical result.

Did you mean 'one of' or 'on of' a you wrote ?
If one of, I'll assume that it was one of the earlier episodes with the defiant. In its earleir episodes, it WAS. That was because starfleet had so few ships in the area.
If you meant 'on of' I'll assunme you meant the Valiant. USS Valiant was destroyed by one of the most powerful ships in the quadrant.

If memory serves the romulans were quite concerned with the defiants capabilities as well. So much so that as a part of the original agreement with the Federation in exchange for the cloaking device was that it could only be activated in the gamma quadrant, and under romulan supervision.
Curiously I dont remember ever seeing a romulan intelligence officer on the bridge...
EDIT: But I am straying off topic.

A Romulan officer was aboard Defiant for a while to keep an eye on the systems use, until the Romulans lost interest in supervision.
For power, the Defiant was identified as one of the most powerful warships in the quadrent even before being refitted with Ablative armor. Number of ships in the sector is irrelevent, while Valient is a terrible ship to base the power from (considering its damage and enemy).
Off-topic is right, the Defiants superior power isn't what this thread is about.

Back to what this topic is about, Ambassador Class construction started in2315, the last unit produced was 2370. The U.S.S. YAMAGUCHI was the first Ambassador Class refit, the original Ambassador Class had 8 phaser array's the up graded had 11, two torpedo tubes fore, and one aft.
Here are some more ship name's
U.S.S. ANDROMEDA NCC-5007
U.S.S.VALDEMAR NCC-26198

And somewhat on topic: Anyone else tempted to mod their singleplayer build of FlOps so the Ambas is a medium ranged ship ?
Things just too big to be short ranged (like the Negvar as well I belive), just looks silly.

I left mine as short range, what has size to do with range?

Having a large starship that has next to no range, while the small sabre has long range, is quite funny, especially when they are grouped.

Having a larger ship move closer while the weaker ones snipe makes some sense because it moves the more durable ships to act like a shield.
I think it was something about the Ambassador Class... information about it or something.
