I wouldn't call the Galaxy a Dreadnought, really ship classes are defined by whoever builds the ship and they're purpose. ie the galaxy is an exploration vessel thats its role in the fleet, it isn't really a war ship.

aaahhhh, the galaxy is a friggin dreadnaught. It doesn't matter what noble sounding, but completely meaningless title its given, in fleet battles it will be Starfleet's Dreadnaught pure & simple.

if it ain't what is?
it doesn't matter that it is smaller than say the dominion's dreadnaught, its still starfleets largest ship. SO in short in fleet battles, the Galaxy class "Explorer" is the feds dreadnaught.

The galaxy class is the biggest ship ,but not the strongest .The sovergin is stronger, and like someone said erlier ,it not size that matters. (its firepower)

and like i said earlier... IN TREK it is size over fire power & amour, or you could say that the Defiant class is a Dreadnaught, since that out guns a galaxy

& while you were trying to ram it, it would have been cutting you to confetti, with its phaser pulse cannons. by the time you had gotten near it, you would be about the size of a pea

I would say that the Galaxy class would be a battle ship at most because of its initial disign during a more peaceful time in the federation and do to its more scienentific roles the basic chasis of the ship would limit its firepower when compared to a Sovereign Class which was desined to with an emphasis on tactical and support missions. And I know you said that it has been refited but refites have its limites because you still have to take the basic design into acount which would limite any upgrade that was preformed on it take the Iowa Class battleship for example they were offited for moderen combat in the 70's the government attempted to equipe them with cruise missiles and modern weaponry but in the end after a short tour of duty they were place back into moth balls because even with the updates the basic ship design just no longer keeped pase with the modern destroyers and missile carriers.

with a good crew a defiant would be a good match for a galaxy, but if the defiant did turnout to be the victor, it would be crippled by the end of the battle (IMHO). Well, I guess we can't know for sure until we see it happen.
