And I submit to you that it is indeed that big.  Some people care enough to examine the evidence and determine sizes.

Cpt Ryan wrote:the excelsior I, is the "USS Excelsior" version, albiet with system upgrades & whatnot. the Excelsior II is most likely the "Enterprise B" subtype, because the was only one lakota type ever made: hardly enough to call it a class.
besides it is probably easier to build an entirely new ship than upgrade the existing Excelsiors up to the "Lakota" standard.

i didn't call the lakota a class, i called it a subtype. big difference. :whistling:

The Lakota was probably just an example of a minor refit.  I'm not even sure if I'd go far enough to call it a subtype.

well actually, although visually there probably wasnt much difference, (from what little we saw in that DS9 episode), it is clear that the Lakota was refitted to be significantly more powerful than the standard excelsior. however i suppose with the cost of it all, it was not worth doing that to all the others since it still lost to the defiant.

stil i think it safer to call it something like a "prototype refit" since there was only 1 known to exist.

It could be.  However, considering all the Excelsior class ships seen in the Dominion War battle scenes, it's very possible that one or many of those were also refitted.  After all, the special effects department has been known to re-use ship models whenever possible...

i doubt any of the other excelsiors were upgraded as much since during the battle scene with the defiant, even worf & obrien (and everyone else) were surprised by the power of one of its phaser hits. almost like they upgraded the lakota in secret.

That would be that most likely conclusion.
