You feel like a battlecruiser is too weak or a race too strong? Go ahead and discuss it here :)

I'm fine with a bit underpowered Federation. I always thought that they in disadvantage to the Klingons or the Romulans because of their multi-role ships. All Fed ships are designed to survey and deep space exploration as well, except of the Defiant. And the facilities for those missions require a lot of space and capacity. This also means that a federation ship can't be armed as heavily as it could be, because they're used sometimes to participate in diplomatic missions.
All in all, I think it should be the part of the Federation tactics that they're in a slight disadvantage to their enemies, so if you play them you seriously would have consider the possibility of a defensive game.

Multi-role ships would have an advantage in having more options available for creative crews to use, and a future FO will make them more unconventional (using deflectors and stuff).

Currently they are at a disadvantage in firepower, so defence is their specialty.

even though feds do less dps, their ships last longer and their fleets get big fast, meaning they dont struggle to put out damage.

Also, Fed science is always ahead of the other races, so they should compensate their lack of DPS with stronger special weapons.

Fed science may be more advanced in some ways but the feds have to follow rules and stuff while the romulans can do whatever they want and if you dont like it the talshar will make you disappear.

So that is to say that i like it the way it is now with the feds being tanks and the romulans having the best specials.

Makes sense since the Feds always pride themselves on their shields

It's not that the feds weapons are weaker (just look at the defiant, they build a small warship and its damage output is like a ship many times it's size for any other race) but they dont focus on it, which makes their ships more durable. Their ships stay in a fight longer, or get back in it quicker, than anyone other than the Borg

The Federation is one of the biggest wasters of space.  They can fit several more decks on their ships than they do and in turn, have stronger shields and weapons.  Bottom line, when it comes to war, none of the factions in Star Trek seem to have it right except the Borg.  And fleet-ops has them powered down so much that resistance is hardly futile unless you are the Federation.

I think the Borg should be balanced for at least a 2v1 with the Borg being the 1.  The Fleet-Ops Defiant has almost no firepower until it ranks up.  It's supposed to shoot at least 4 pulses in under 1/2 of a second from each pulse launcher and have four pulse launchers!  The fleet-ops Defiant has only 2 pulse launchers and only fires 1 pulse from each launcher.

Starfleet aren't 'space wasters' just because they use their space for things other than weapons.

TCR I often wonder this ... but I feel I should ask outright before 2011 begins ....

Are you sure you're playing the same game the rest of us are playing?
We're all playing an addon for Star Trek Armada 2 (by Activision) called "Fleet Operations".  It's currently in it's 3.1.4 patch version which has better balance than any previous patch.

  Just asking ....

Merry Christmas!

I'm not talking about just weapons.  I'm talking about how much space in the hall ways, rooms, and especially the space between the floor and the ceiling.  So much space to pressurize, which means fewer resources actually power the ship, and more resources go into maintaining such a large environment.  The only things that are taken offline during a heavy battle are the food replicators and life support from empty decks.  They can add more power sources in that wasted space and even have at least a couple power sources as dedicated servers for the tactical systems, but they're just fine with only primary, secondary, reserve, and emergency power systems.  Too few systems on such large ships.  Especially on ones the size of aircraft carriers and several times the size of carriers.

The only Federation ship that has it right is the defiant.  And they still have too much space inside that vessel.

I'm playing fleet-ops 3.1.4.  Well, I haven't played online in a while because of my projects, but from the ones I have played, the Federation are underpowered until they are on a tripple-Federation team, then they're more likely to win than if they're only double-Federation or single-Federation teams.

Starfleet ships have a lot of room because they are multi-purpose, and need a lot to fit the different things in and empty space for upgrades. You don't know what they shut down during battle because only the Defiant was shown properly during real battle, and even that never went into any detail. The multiple existing seperate energy supplies is enough considering how much energy the give on just primary works for everything with no noticable drain, and the have several backups for the computer and (if Voyagers MSD if any indication) a spare warp core. Comparing a 24th century Starship to a 20th century Aircraft Carrier isn't a reliable idea; very different ships, tech & requirements.

Defiant has tiny rooms, tiny corridors and very little (very cramped) space.

TCR, if you've only played a few MP games, then take it from people who play A LOT of multiplayer that things are fine, and that you're not doing well with the feddies because you're only playing a MP game every once in a while.  Some of us have years of experience of playing online, and can use the feds quite handily.  But even people who just start playing online have done well with them.  It's a small wonder that they're the #1 choice by new players just starting out.  You can instantly be "good" with them using certain build orders and a certain Mayson admiral. :innocent:

You might be fine playing online in a combat game, but I prefer racing.  And the longer the race, the better.  I'm not playing any Fleet-Ops games online right now because of my projects, and I'm waiting for the release of rFactor 2.
