Bear in mind that on ships like the Excelsior, the phaser banks are mounted in pairs. So there are 10 just on the top of the saucer (5x2), therefore 30 isn't so ridiculous.

While we're on the subject of the Lakota I'll nominate her crew. Specifically Benteen. I could see her reasons for siding with Leyton but then again Leyton's methods were somewhat... irregular.

As for the ship itself. I'd be inclined to vouch for it being armed with type 10 phasers but to be honest it is a bit of speculation since there are no canon facts regarding it's phasers. The Lakota COULD have finished off the Defiant were it not for the skill of the Defiant crew, her natural maneuverability, ablative armour AND the fact that Benteen eventually folded and back down. Benteen played an important role in ensuring the survival of the Defiant. Had Leyton been in direct command i think it would have likely been a different story because he would not have hesitated on giving the order to destroy the Defiant.

And remember that while the Defiant may be powerful, it is better described as overpowered for its size. The refitted Excelsior is a large ship maxed out with as much technology as it reasonably could be considering its age, so we'd expect it to pack a punch. I admire the Defiant too, but it's not the most powerful ship in the Federation. Of course the relative weightings in Flops are a bit different, but that's mainly due to balancing issues.

i seriously doubted the defiant would of survived the assault from the excelsior. 80 year old tech is still just as good as standard TNG era tech, and all i see is the bias comments to the defiant because its all powerful and faster and mainly because it's a part of ds9's story arc. maybe so but the excelsior has had more field time and has been refined over the decades, where as very little is known about the defiant and had the defiant been on the front line a few years before the incident, i'm sure it would of mopped up the excelsior without any problems because its possible the defiant class ship would of gotten an upgrade by then.

according to actual star trek canon, the excelsior received Quantum torpedo upgrades, which means it's firepower was greatly increased, peace time galaxy class ships had type 8 phasers along with excelsior class ships. so realistically thinking about it with the new upgrade type 9 phasers are about right assuming the excelsior has a big enough powerplant. the sovereign class uses type 10 phasers...

actually, the sovereign has type 12 phasers as standard.

That would make 20 on a typical Excelsior, plus the extra 3 seen on Lakota (there would likely be another to mirror the Phaser next to the neck) making 24.

I have never seen an Excelsior fire double shots, each location shot one blast from the middle.

You have to wonder where they get their facts from, don't you?

I think the Cadet crew of the USS Valiant were pretty stupid, and cocky.  and dead.

The other 10 ships after the first 29 were destroyed at Wolf 359.

Beat you to it ;)

Well, I don't know how stupid the crews of those ships were, they didn't know what they were up against. They had 39 ships vs 1 cube so they thought maybe that even if the cube was stronger, they'll win by shear force of numbers. The only stupid thing they did IMO was to take the civies with them in battle. Remember Emissary part 1 ;)

That was desperation, which ship was a civilian? They were all in Starfleet service and didn't have time to offload any civilians because Starfleet was caught earlier than expected.

And which were on nightshift? Which is what ships often are at during the night.

I don't know which were this and that, BUT ALL OF THEM WERE STUPID!

They had weaker ships than the Borg - They were stupid
The didn't know the Borg had Transwarp - They were stupid
They didn't know anything about the Borg - They were stupid

What's next? Defiant was affected by a Breen Energy Dampner, so Sisko and the crew were stupid?

Reading this thread, you'd think Starfleet trained their crews to be stupid.
