More like it's in suspended animation. Ready to be awoken at a time when it is least expected.

confirmed by a more mainstream news source: Sopa plans set to be shelved as Obama comes out against piracy legislation | Technology | guardian.co.uk

this is good news, even if they try again, it won't be immediately, we've added a delay, and we've won, so we can win again if they try again. any site that committed to join reddit in the blackout didn't even need to, so if there's a next time, sites may sign up earlier.

WTF is SOPA ? aka The American Government trying to ruin the internet

Totalbiscuit explains the issue quite well, and explains why non-American citizens should care as much as Americans. It's quite informative, I strongly recommend everyone watching this.

It's not dead, the vote has been suspended due to white house opposition - but there are still numerous supporters of the bill in congress and you can almost guarantee it will be back on the table before long.

Also, and extremely important to note: while SOPA has been shelved for now, it's sister legislation PIPA is still very much alive.

IIRC he was a bit too repetitive, loud, unspecific, and sounding like he was trying to make us afraid (understandable given the topic, but I don't like it when the news is trying to tell me how to feel about things). Maybe that's just his style, but I recommend just looking at the articles he cited since they provide all the important details in a shorter, calmer form.

As meny are aware of if you serf the net allot you have seen the campaign stop Protect IP. Witch could even impact Fleet ops by slowing down prediction of the Mod by making the Molders more careful on where they get out side media. This would enable Fleets to be blocked from US internet searches and block the Fleet ops doman name from US computers if the government did not like fleet ops.

Update 4 US senater have now come out against it to day that where not be for. Update/

Merging thread. I did not see this tread so I am merging it to this thread and removing it from the other.

So, with the internet rejoicing at giving big media companies a bloody nose over sopa, they killed megaupload:

BBC article

:( looks like they won't get the message and go f**k themselves after all.

I wonder when the FBI/us gov't will start abusing their ridiculously inappropriate power to take down sites they just don't like, rather than ones they slander with accusations of crime.

even without sopa, far too many powers over the internet are entrusted to people who can't be trusted to use them in the best interests of people. when the us politicians are no longer owned by big corporate "donators", they can be trusted with these powers. currently the people with the power have a vested interest to abuse these powers and support their funders.
