I'd like to suggest a minor change which would bring the ship closer to the show. I'm talking about the weapon sound. I'd like to have the pulse phaser-sound changed to the one we know from TV.
A sound sample can be found here for example.

I believe the old pulse phaser from a2 has the sound taken directly from the show (the one used by the star base I know was correct. )DOCa Cola wrote:if we can get our hands on a clear version of it, why not

I took a sample from a sound-mod for Legacy. It doesn't sound 100% correct because of the firerate of the Defiant in FO but matches the sound we know from the show.
I've attached it to this post.
The second attachment is the stock A2 sound, because...

You're right and thanks a lot for posting that! That's much better than the replacement I use
It can be so easy to make me happy

Weaker shields: Along with it's crew of merely 80 marines, the ship would easily fall prey to captures. While this could be a good thing for ballance, it also could ruin the use of the defiant. Still I had a hard time believing my defiants died so quickly.
More special energy cost: Very much agreed. I'd have preferred a 50 or even 60 cost. a 60 would force you to wait for a slight recharge when firing a second shot.
All in all I found the little ships overpowered. I tought to build a few for roleplay value, sending them to a small far-off dominion base of another who kept 2 or 3 of his prototype ships there. While I expected a short raid, destroying one ship maybe, I managed to wipe multiple out before deciding it was wise to retreat into a nebula. The defiant-class was VERY strong.

I've always actually found the sovie quite weak
its a britle battleship every time I have used it, like a glass cannon more than the thing you see in the movies, but this is about the defiant, so i'll shut up

The Sovereign is powerful but it takes too friggin' long to build
. It's more cost effective to build many defiants before the enemy squashes your ass. The defiant is marginally too quick (or cheap) to build, in such a way that the balance is tipped favour of a defiant build frenzy, which is one of the things I hate about the unmodded a2 (build frenzies of one class of ship) >:(.
