yea, crates are a feature that will come with an "off" option ;)

The Crystaline Entity idea reminds me of one of the very earliest Command and Conquer games. There was an electric cloud monster that randomly roamed the map destroying everything in it's wake. It only seemed to appear after relentless usage of the Chronosphere superweapon :). I used to suppress the enemy and then mess about building depots for tanks as well as leading enemy soldiers into purpose built prisons. One time I spent ages filling every bit of available space on the island with Flamer Troops. Unfortunately the Electrocloud crashed my party and zapped just one of those men, setting a chain reaction explosion that wiped out all lightly armoured units and burnt all the trees. Then the entity wiped out my tank depot and destroyed the outer walls of my prison. I remember a prisoner running out and then burning in the flames of a thousand troops. I had a lot of time on my hands back then.

Anyway, I think this crates idea is good. I also like the idea of "boss monsters" floating about space. Naturally they'd be rare.

Maybe the playstation version was borked  :blink:

I remember that git ravaged almost everything I had. It did eventually disappear but not before dealing significantly more damage than 5 units :) (though much of that damage could be attributed to the massive number of chain reaction explosions from my flamer troops combusting.


With these crates I'd quite like collectibles for larger maps. So you could have maybe 5 objects to collect on a map. There could then be special bonus tech that only becomes available depending on which crate(s) you picked up. These "collectibles" could be persistent on the map so you have to keep control of them and other races can take them from you by force to steal the bonus tech that a particular collectible provides.

The Crystaline entity could do damage to shields, if shields are down, crew decreases, leaving the ship behind ready for boarding ...

57. A mutany on one of your ships, it goes rouge and attacks you and your allies.

58. A group of Manquis raiders attack the ship that got the crate/anomoly

59. The ship comes across a cloaking device and gains the ability to cloak :cloak:


PS. it would be cool to have  diff effects or models that are random, so its not always a crate floating in space. :P

Instead of Crates etc., could this feature be more like investigating somes stellar phenomenon or investigating a shipwreck or an encounter with an unknown ship/species?

thats exactly what i mean, thnx for reinforcing.

like the anomalies from Galactic Civilisation 2, there random and can have bonuses for you, the universe, or even plundge it into peril forcing team work.

yea, crates are more or less just a working title in this thread. there may even different types of crates like already some of you mentioned debris, anomalies etc..

60: A quantum singularity opens up and a few Bioships come out, there very tough and mt even force team work to destroy them all.


61: Spawns a random ship of another race that when captured gives you a slight defence and offence bonus against that race.
