They seemed more concerned about him living up to their standards than living up to his. Klingons are violent, but they're not mindless killers.

A DS9 episode said a challenge to the death was a slap with the back of the hand, which Klag didn't do to Riker. That would imply there are ways to challenge without killing the enemy.

true, but i bet some senior klingon officer sent the captain of that ship a sternly worded email saying that riker isnt expected to kill anyone and that he should be given a little slack on those things. explaining why they would tolerate him not engaging in fights to the death. they were also happy to let him give the captain back his ship at the end.

then the captain backhanded him, which later meant fight to the death.

klinks arent mindless killers, but they have the mindset for killing often, even backhanding someone starts a fight to the death.

Since DS9 episode said a challenge to the death was a slap with the back of the hand (something I don't remember happening to Riker the first time), that would imply there are ways to challenge without killing the enemy if that is specified as a 'death fight'.

I edited my post to include the DS9 episode just before your post...

the captain did hit riker with the back of the hand, at the end, when riker gave him the bridge back.

I said the first time, it was the second officer that challenged him. It just as easily makes the 'death slap' a contradiction as proving he had special privilages.

Or that he wasn't working as part of the crew anymore and was officially working for the Enterprise again.
