Oh I agree, it could have been far far worse.
I'll likely end up watching it anyway, to see Cumberbatch be as awesome as he's allowed to be, and see how Scotty is the butt-monkey this time (although apparently they have at least built an engineering set this time) -- and, of course, for the starship porn which I hope will be of good quality, and kept to a consistent scale.

even if there's good "starship porn" you won't see any of it. too much lens flare and the camera will be moving like a drunk roadrunner. honestly, the effects in jj1 weren't that bad, you just never got any time to appreciate them because of bad directing.

The engineering section reminded me of every factory I used to work in. I suspect that if they camera moved just a little to the side there would be rolling door with an forklift parked next to it.
I also agree with the other comment about the ridiculous amount of lense flare on the bridge and also the camera movement. There are about a dozen directors I would have rather had on this series than JJ Abrams but unfortunately we are stuck with him. At least it can't possibly be worse than Generations or ST 9

i thought i heard somewhere that the lens flare would be gone or very toned down,
also i thought the lack of making a engineering the 1st time round was a big mistake. and the isolated station kirk found scotty in. didnt look right for a futuristic starfleet base at all.
to be honest the internal design of the romulan ship didnt make sense to me for it having lots of ramps without railings that didnt seem to have any purpose.
still i look forward to it (even if it diddled with some stuff it shouldnt of)

much of the film was like that. things that made no sense. it's star trek done in a star wars style. lots of lazors and pew pew, but without any of the mostly good writing trek had. it's simpler, more mass market, hence why jj was allowed to make more.

Even Star Wars had railings.
I was severely dissapppointed with the last movie and I really hope that they at least put some thought into this next one. The part that irked me the most was.
"We know you are only in your twenties and just graduated from Starfleet......but were going to put in you charge of our flagship anyways" WTF!

Even though this may not be exactly fits the theme, I was especially disappointed with Star Trek XI because the basic concept. There was nothing visible of Star Trek in the sense of Gene Roddenberry. Certainly, this may not be essential for a video game scenario, but it spoils the fun of the story itself.
What do you think?
I think every Star Trek movie, always had a political, social or philosophical core idea - except the eleventh. That's why I deleted it completely from “my Star Trek universe” ...

Just going to throw it out there that most of starfleets command staff was in the lorencia system ( wrong spelling I know) so they made do with a bunch of new ships just released from the yards AND staffed them with cadets. It was also mentioned that they were under a state of emergency and that was why cadets were used to fill officer grade positions.
As for the Romulan ship.... it was based on Reman designs and it was also a mining ship. beyond that the ship went through a worm hole, waited in space for several years all the while fighting off groups of different ships etc. The interior was not design for comfort to begin with but rather utility, and for all we know those platforms could extend to create additional deck space... etc.
The base on that little ice planet was a remote outpost, since the series has basically been rewritten and half the stuff re-designed, id say that looks like a federation outpost. A remote one at that, again with the designed for utility rather than comfort.

Forget comfort, the Romulan ship apparently wasn't designed with its crews lives in mind. From what I've heard, it would give the OSHA Nightmares!

The old series bored me to death. The plots were predictable, the messages pretty cut and dry (though there were plenty of twists later on), and not enough fighting scenes that involved more than the ship sitting still shooting a burst of phasers and torpedos and then some idiot ensign getting blown away from his/her console. The new movie not only beats the hell out of any of the old ones, it actually gets a job well done in my opinion.
For example, star trek movie with whales that talk to alien life forms........ there are not enough words in the english language for me to describe what a stupid plot line this was.
TNG - the federation is a military organization. First episode Tasha back talks the captain and then doesnt follow orders.... Court Marshal anyone? "tech the tech" used in the script before they liberally salted it with "sciency" words.
The original series - built for a different age and different market, thus I wont touch it because it was golden for the time.
Voyager - to much talk like TNG, decent fight scenes and better plots later in the series.
DS9 - didnt watch enough to judge.
Enterprise - some bad acting..... just like every other trek series. Better plots, great visuals, I actually enjoyed this one as apposed to wanting to blow my brains out right off the bat.
Granted all the series got better as they closed in on the final few seasons, but honestly the movie is a dead on shot. Good story, good plots, best intro to a movie ever, plenty of shooting and blown up ships. AWESOME

True story! Nero was unstable mentally before the planet blew up which killed his wife... he was about making money and later about revenge for his wife and childrens death.

I meant afterwards at the big meeting in front of the assembly where he was given command of the ship. I find it hard to believe that starfleet lost all of their senior officers and Kirk was the only one remaining. He should have been given a command of a smaller ship to start off with. This speaks to a much bigger issue of this being the "twighlight" version of star trek where everyone is good looking and no one is over the age of 40 except for Spock (future version). I instantly compared it to Starship Troopers where only one person in the entire movie actually looked like a grizzled veteran combat officer..........and when I compare a move to Starship Troopers for any reason, that isn't good news.
Regarding architecture. The problem I have is mostly with the Federation stuff. They literally used existing push bar doors that you see in any gym today. They didn't even try to dress it up with some blinking lights. The hallways were made out of cinderblock that you find in any school in this country. It was absolutely pathetic. I think they went over budget on their lense flare effects and took it out of anything to do with Scotty. Maybe the actor that played Scotty banged JJs girlfriend or something.
Regarding the various TV shows my order would go DS9,TNG,TOS,VOY,Star Trek Animated series, and finally Enterprise. Call me shallow, but my single biggest issue with Enterprise was Scott Bakula. I could not stop thinking of him disappearing in a blue flash and reappering in a sunday dress on some front porch. The asian chick was really hot though, gave Grace Kelly from Battlestar a run for her money.
I have been wanting a Star Trek movie for a long time with Romulans as the bad guys as my very favorite TOS episode was teh one with the Romulan Warbird destroying the outpost (its the one where you see Kirk at the end trying to get it on with the wife of one of the dead crewmen at his funeral) and we I get a defective human clone that has Remans that are an offshoot of the Romulans so even that doesn't count. I finally get Romulans and they just suck balls.

Well the appearance dealo = Genetic alterations before birth. A very real and potential issue (Google or Wiki)...... plus I doubt starfleet is going to recruit an over weight farmer who doesn't know the difference between blue ray and HD.
As for the Kirk issue.... I recall he took charge of the enterprise for a while in the old series when Pike was taken hostage by klingons (he was a cadet). It was an old book I'll admit...... so what's the deal? Look at the wiki for him, he was the youngest captain in star fleet (Before XI and after).
