I don't think this new Star trek is anything like new Battlestar Galactica which was dark gritty and clever.
The changes made in Battlestar Galactica were also superficial like changes in character. They didn't start changing the ideology or dumbing it down or ignoring science.
Battlestar Galactica showed that proper Sci-Fi with an intelligent story can still work and be successful today. This movie just showed that hollywood can make a rubish script still.
I have no problem with them re-inventing Star Trek it does need re-inventing. I didn't actually like any Star treks after Deep Space Nine and the recent movies were not that great.
My problem was just with the script of this movie which lets face it was badly written and made no sence.
Cadets don't suddenly gain control over a federation flag ship and get promoted from ensign to captain.
Military officers don't act anything like Kirk was acting in this film if they don't want be be discharged
You can't suddenly ignore transporter limitations and start transporting people accross the galaxy from a planet to a star ship moving at warp in an unknown direction probably with its shields up. If you could then why would they be using star ships in the future and not star gates.
Why was a romulan mining ship armed to the teeth and in possession of dangeroes singularities. A commercial or civilian vessal even from the future isn't going to be able to wipe out the entire Vulcan defence force and the Star Fleet re-inforcements. Vulcans were higly edvanced at this point in history the reason the earth based fleet wasn't was mainly because the vulcans didnt share a lot of technology.
I mean come on even our current air defence system in the real world would have no problem taking down that mining platform.
Time travel scripts just generally suck because they remove all concequence.
So how was this movie good in any way other than the effects? How was this movie anything like the new Battlestar Gallactica? How was this movie even anything like a Science fiction program?

i honestly dont know where you got BSG had a link to science from, it ignored any rational science many times... But ill leave Dominus when he appears from the dead to go through all the problems with BSG and Science since he gave me a massive debate about it on msn...
But for one thing, when a missle hits a ship the size of BSG, the OC wouldnt shake as the mass is too great...

A friend said the romulen ship looked a lot like one of the dark scary ships from Babylon 5, I can definitely see that. The shape of the ship is not classic romunlen I don't like is as much altho is was more scary and did bring in the much needed support for trek how I feel is irrelevant it did the trick I think!

only becouse of the amout of advertising money CBS has thrown at it, as for the movie itself i'm sorry but I don't think startrek needs re-inventing
evan if it did they should have done it by moving "FORWARD" with a new series like what TNG did for TOS maybe about Rikers new command on the Titan... not by hiring some hot shot directer and writers to make another starwars film with a startrek logo
I hope to god this is the only 1 becouse if your right and CBS intends to make more movies based on this one... it'll completely invalidate all the previos startrek series and movies
i mean think about it... if they expand on this alternate reality it'll become the prime reality wich puts all the past treks in the alternante time line there for invalitating them all
guse what that means!! :woot:
CBS CEO: hell it worked for TOS lets re-invent TNG make it look real cool we'll evan make picards head shinyer..
then there gos the neighborhood :(

Don't over-react; this isn't the end of all we know and love. Let's face it: after Enterprise and Nemesis, it's a miracle that Star Trek even got another shot. We should be thankful instead of whining about it. It's a new timeline to explore, after all.

That's all I could think when the enterprise began firing

Good movie, but hardly sci-fi. Contrived script to add in "in-jokes" that could have been subtly introduced, and a WHOLE BLOODY SCENE at the end for Scotty's "brilliance". Which, by the way, DIDN'T EVEN PRETEND TO MAKE SENSE >:( >:( >:( >:(

thank you for that great link that sums it up...
personally i havnt enjoyed nearly every past trek film... Generations is ok but you have to ignore a whole bunch of things like not rotating sheild frequencies... Most of the original ones are just absoutely boring as hell unless your from that era so loved them when you first saw them, maybe no the wrath of khan... but most, especially the one when they fling round the sun...

Even Bernd Schneider (who you're more likely to know as the webmaster of EAS) is starting to regret bashing Enterprise so much now that the movie's out.
Everything aside, First Contact still is and possibly will always be the best ST film.
