Yeah back in the day when I replaced my old GeForce 4 128MB video card with a GeForce 7800GS I lost the ability to play Klingon Academy. Never had a system since then that could run it, I was planning on building a legacy system to run all my old PC games, I have a PIII mobo and CPU lying around and just got my hands on a new copy of Windows 98SE from our old work computers. Just have to see if I can get a good deal on an old GeForce 4 or Radeon 9800 somewhere to get it running.

And about the BotF AI, yeah its very hawkish in its ways, they are a bunch of demanding asshats and its very difficult to keep them happy. Your best bet is to try to expand and hopefully grab enough minor races that it doesnt matter who doesnt like you. Also if the AI attacks just keep sending peace offerings, eventually by them rejecting you it will start to lower their moral and alot of the time they wont even attack you, just keep a close eye on your neighbors and keep them happy.

and you wonder why i think botf isnt a good game ...

So you want to AI to hang on your every word, jump at the chance to be your friend, and go out on it's way to not attack you? Just doesn't sound like an interesting game to me. I guess the problem with BotF is that the I has the same goal as you.

Actually, what he wants is for it to act rationally. The diplomacy system doesn't work in that game.

This review mentions a number of problems it has: http://www.strategyplanet.com/content/reviews/botf/

I'm not sure what I'm supposed to read into the review, I've played it many times and never noticed the memory leak and perhaps it's the Total War AI I'm used to dealing with but backstabbing seems a standard issue with games without defined alliances but again I haven't experienced it very often. Other than that, in my experience, intercept makes for great border defense. And anyone who plays, try out UDM.

The important part of the review is that it includes the AI's failings. Backstabbing is fine, except this game breaks alliances and declares war, then offers peace and repeats at the drop of a hat with no reason or logic. Not something you'd expect the Federation to do every other turn...

As I said I haven't experienced backstabbing very often and certainly not every other turn. And if I may ask, have you played the patched or (better yet) modded game? It sounds as if the reviewer hadn't.

Patched originally, modded recently. Still gives more trouble, if reduced a bit. The 'every other turn' was more of a generalisation, they're completely random so it would be worse sometimes than others.

It would be a bad review if it had a mod installed... when you review a game, it would be dishonest to add a mod that changes it. You'd be reviewing the mod rather than the game.

Don't know what to tell you then, I've only had some trouble with back stabbing and I don't see a problem with ally AI since I can't control the ally AI, only game I've played that worked on it was Empire Earth 2 with the battle plans. I still think BotF is a great game and feel that you miss something for not playing it.

I do play it and still like it, despite the problems I have on it. I just don't play it as often as the other games I have.

Star Trek The Next Generation: Birth of the Federation for PC - GameFAQs
That's the game this topic is about. So not sure why you have Armada 2 involved.

not if you have a BotF CD.  I have heard that the a2 cd will run both bridge commander aswell as BotF, but I am not sure.
