Getting people to play online.
Here you can arrange online encounters and reminisce over past online battles.

I strongly suggest you guys to use the Teamspeak server even if you don't have a microphone or so. Reason for me is that I don't seem to have all Wippien accounts listed in my Wippien AND (which is much more important) there I can find people who don't use Wippien but Hamachi or even Gamespy for their respected reasons. I also use Hamachi and Gamespy. Thing is - Wippien and Hamachi exclude each other.
So please whenever you want to play FleetOps join TS ... I've restructured it for our use and most probably you won't find any non FO people on there.

Hey, that makes sense. Team speak servers have chat rooms where you can speak to everybody at once, yes? It would be like the gamespy lobby, but better. This would be helpful in setting up games. Good thinking!

Right now the only reason i dont play online is wippien. I can run fine once i'm ingame, however if wippien dies while i'm ingame, itl drop me from the game, because when wippien random disconnects, sometimes it will completely kill my internet alltogether in the process (and thus i'll drop from a game in progress). Its not my internet, i get 10mb service from Charter. For some reason Wippien just does not jive with my computer/connection. Another format of connecting with other players would resolve this and i would play online all the time, because rest assured, i DO want to play online.

Yeah, finding a site that is free where nobody has connection problems and everything works fine has been our biggest barrier for multiplayer. Wippien's been ok for most people, but I'd love to find something that works well for everybody. If anyone's got a good suggestion, let's hear it!

As far as meeting up and chatting is concerned, FO's own IRC channel might help. I dont know the particulars of setting one up, but its a pretty heavily used format for public chat's for all kinds of things. Can even be integrated into websites (like this one). IRC isnt particularly useful in connecting to other people for games, as far as i'm aware, though. However, i do know that X-fire has built in join game options where you can join a game someone on your friends list is in. If it were compatible with FO, and you could join a game somebody has created, then it might be useful. As far as i know, nobody's ever had a problem using x-fire. However, that feature is not compatible with every game, let alone mod, so i am not sure if it would work.
Other than that, i have no ideas currently...i will keep an eye out though, as wippien certainly isnt an option for me (assuming i dont find a solution)

Can there be a flt ops only VN program? Because if we have a private virtual network, then we wouldn't have the lag caused by a lack of service attention toward us because we'd have the servers to our selves.

Greetings, the major problem guys, plain and simple. Number of players, different time zones, different languages and no central place to meet up and chat.
I would consider installing FO again but iam not gonna play ai all the time. Want people to interact with.
And I play a ton of EVE Online and then with the new STARTREK ONLINE starting up in Feb.
Teamspeak IMO is vastly inferior to VENTRILO.

My internet has a bandwidth limit that I really don't want to burn up with gaming...

HORY CLAP! You came back Bear! Yea, another old member returns
Anyway, if you are still seeing this, there are now (and have been for quite some time) a constant "supply" of people playing online at almost all hours - of course, you'll have to install Wippien to take advantage of that
. Seems to be between 4-15 people on all the time. The myth that there are no online players is quite frankly ridiculous as the 80 odd people who set up and use Wippien can attest to. Sadly I have heard this tale from some of the oldest members of FO, and every time I've been told that, it seems to actually be the case that they no longer wish to play and are just making a convenient (but false) excuse.
I'm sorry to hear that Xanto - hopefully that won't stay that way forever
EDIT: I should add, Bear, that your clan's website doesn't even have a link to a recent version of FO it seems (only has pre release), which is a pity

One way I would like to swing this discussion is towards finding a network that works for everyone. If you are one of the people who said that connecting to wippien was a problem, you need to PM Unleashed Mayhem and try out social vpn and some of the other sites tom has suggested.
If you are one of these people, please post that you are so that others can pm you and try a game with some of these other vpns.

You and me both, I may play some... It's not that I can't play. Just not a lot. Maybe like 2 or 3 times a month. I would have to test it and see how much bandwidth the game would use, it may be very little. Also I modify my files, won't that effect online play?

Yes, modding will change your gamer version so you can't play with us
. But games use very little bandwidth. I don't know for sure, but it's something about 20KB/s maximum for almost any game. FO would be less than this.

Ooh, I think that's a bit of an underestimation. I'm quite sure that a game running online is considerably more than that.
COULD be wrong!

I think the amount of bandwidth taken by a game maybe around 120 kb/s. idn, I'm just guessing.
