Getting people to play online.
Here you can arrange online encounters and reminisce over past online battles.

@blazing_gig
First, no one will eat you or berate you if you don't win. And if someone does, tell us. We are here to have fun, and not to compete on a contest about who has the biggest e-peen.
Second, there is place for everyone in the online communitiy, even sucky players.
Even if your learning curve is not as steep as DN's, Mal or Mort, you will learn eventually. Either to play very well or to avoid excessively good players.
Third, RL... well, that can't be helped. I'm unemployed, but I discovered very soon that even in this case, your playing time is limited. Looking for a job takes almost as many hours a day as having a job.
Mal's suggestion about teaming against AI is very good. Learning to play WITH a fellow player is capital in multiplayer. Coordinating is hard, as each player tends to go his/her own way.

I play online all the time but you're right about the mort thing. It should be that you saw his warpins then freaked out, he isnt much of a rhein person.

Also whenever I do play online something seems to come up in RL which makes me in a hurry to leave
Aww, don't worry - we all sucked at one time or another, and most of us will gladly do a comp stomp if it gets you to play online more frequently. Young blood is what keeps the strategies and fun coming

As for the Wippien security concerns - the only thing that makes it less secure than poor 'ol Hamachi is that it displays your IP address to other players. So if you feel you cannot trust the other gamers, then indeed that will be a problem.

Hamachi displayes IPs aswell. By creating a VPN there is always the risk of someone doing bad things with your system. However, people who have been on LAN partys or the like know that one can't just step into your computer as you have to allow another person access for specific folders. Same with Wippien and Hamachi. There is software that can hack into it, however, but your desktop security software handles probable issues. If you have non, I recommend to just invite/add people to your Wippien contact list that you know and trust.
I for my part haven't had any problems so far.

I believe online play in Fleet Operations is too repulsive atm. First there's no real place people can meet and chat in one room like the gamespy lobby. Second, hosting and joining games in gamespy lobby is a frustrating thing. One have to open a hell of ports and still it doesnt work and on top of that there are some weird connection issues. Third, the game itself makes alot of problems in game concerning lag. If there's just one guy with a lowbe system game play just sucks.
Over VPN this ingame issues can be overcome. But that is getting us back to point 1. It's repulsive for public people to use VPN systems and repulsive to have that much troubles to get a game started that lags.

Actually, the chatroom services offered by wippien are weak, and they are one of the most needed features for the FO community.
We do need a place to meet and talk. Opening individual convos with players is not the way to go.

Use Wippien (here/): most people cannot use Gamespy

What if we also used Xfire? It's been suggested before, and it supports armada 2. I know that's one more thing you have to add, but there's got to be a popular, easy-to-use chat system that people know about. Then we can chat on that, and still send personal messages through wippien. Or any other chat system.
