Will ships in the game be slowly replaced?

Post ideas and suggestions on new features or improvements here.

It probably could be done, but hardly worth the expense and effort. Trying that is probably what eventually killed the Constitution.

Sometimes, a new ship is more cost effective than a refit.

Kinda related to this subject: What is the difference between Refit and Retrofit?

Well, since the Excelsior II is sister class to the Sovereign...  :whistling: maybe they made use of the old scrap metal... hehe . The Miranda II likewise is using retrofitted Dominion technology  ^-^

You can't strip a 1968 Ford Mustang and turn it into a 2010 Mustang.  The techonology involved in making and running each one is far too different.  Even though Ford is valued for having frequently interchangeable parts to ease costs when something breaks down.

Newer versions of things have different electronic capacities, they have different mechanisms, and even on a car the actual layout is instrumental to making the vehicle efficient and capable.  A Starship is vastly more complex with oodles more opportunities to "screw something up".  If you are talking about how it would be in reality then no one would EVER go to so much cost and trouble to strip an old one and rebuild it when there is so much liability and risk involved, not to mention the extra cost.

Always cheaper to just start from the ground up .  Buildings in real life are sometimes an exeception, as they generally have more room by nature to adjust pipes, wires, and such.  But even then houses and buildings are routinely demolished and hauled away rather than being refitted.

Fair enough, though technically you could strip that '65 down and turn it into something completely new, say, a 1965 Mustang Mk. II?  Heh heh...

My final thoughts on the original topic, I do like the medley of different-era ships, and hope to see some nice additions in the future.  And for fans of the Excelsior, I made a nice tribute banner for you to use:

To answer the mysteries of the intrepid class, there were infact 3 intrepid class vessels, Voyager being the 3rd.

USS Intrepid, launched in 2370, was the first Intrepid class and a prototype.
USS Bellerophon, launched in 2371.
USS Voyager, launched in 2371.

So really the Intrepid isn't all that old.

Howeever there is noway to judge howlong starfleet keep their vessels active, for instance, the Constitution class served just 30 years, however both the Excelsior and the Excelsior refit both served 70-90 years of service.

The Intrepid was active in 2370, nothing on when it was launched. Only that it was already in service and competing with Galaxy Class during the D's time. Around 10-13 year difference between Galaxy and Intrepid would still make it about a 40 year old ship, if the Galaxy is 50.

But Voyager constantly implied that the Intrepid class was a brand new ship class.
In the episode were Cpt. Braxton tries to destroy Voyager in the past and 7of9 had to follow him it's even implied that the U.S.S. Voyager had been commisioned for active duty as first ship of her class.
(At least that was my understanding of certain dialogs).

Even if not 40 years aren't that much for a capable starfleet ship class (think about the Excelsior/Miranda class). And Voyagers small trip through the delta quadrant proved very well that the Intrepid class is a more than capable multi purpose ship class (especially when it comes down to shoot the borg )

Voyager is Voyager, Intrepid is Intrepid. Not the same ship. Voyager is new, Intrepid was already in service.

Except that Intrepids aren't multi-purpose, more long-range heavy scouts with poor science facilities. Voyager also had 7 of 9's Borg knowlege and a coffee-addicted Captain (a fearsome combo, in any situation).
Unless in Borg space, they're a natural at finding their way around there...

Great, topic has gone off-topic... and Galaxy Class aren't even involved!

Evolvement does not necessary need the construction of new cachassis. The question is if the technical stuff fits into the chassis. As many components may become smaller as times change a chassis can last forever if it still fits the purpose perfectly. Further the shape of a spaceship is irrelevant for spaceflight anyway. In this respect its the sphere and cube struggling for the best design. It's just men, who always like to see a new fancy design.
