Novas were supposed to be the replacement for Oberths as for Mirandas still being in active service that was mainly because they were so freaking many of them. Excelsiors and Mirandas seemed to have on some sort of assembly line literally hundreds of them built. The main thing that bugged me in TNG was lack of ambassador class ships we saw what 4 in the whole series the E-C, Zhukov, Excalibur, and the Yamaguchi

It's a big Federation... you can never tell how many there are by how many are seen. Most Ambassadors were probably in other sectors.

I stumbled upon an interesting fan-made design:
Federation USS Scharnhorst (Fan Creation)
Would be interesting to see this vessel.

Hmmmm, it's interesting.... But I'd don't think it belongs in fleet ops. It looks like the Feds version of babylon 5's whitestar.

looks like an intrepid and a danube used a nebula class as their progenitor

A recent topic about sensor ghosts reminded me about two classes of vessels i saw in the star trek museum.
The Furious and Spectre Class The Starfleet Museum - Furious Class and Spectre Class
Both use the same frame, but have different functions.
The Furious Class was a deep-reaction penetrator (no that kind you perverts) in the late 23rd/early 24th century.
It is described as better armed than an Excelsior Class and was tasked with quick strikes into heavily defended areas.
The Spectre was Intel and recon. With modified warp engine to reduce the signature, creation of sensor ghosts and rumored to have a cloak. The Spectre may have been directly responsible for the treaty of Algeron between the Federation and Romulans in which the development of federation cloak was forbidden.
In FO the Furious Class would have stats roughly comparable to an Ambassador but without the shield special and the Spectre would be comparable to a basic Nebula or Remore with possible a grey mode for recon or sensor jammers.
In my opinion these vessels could easily have been brought back into the reserve fleet after the federation losses during the Dominion War and they would make for some extra variation in the warp-in.
P.s. the hull markings are plain ugly, but the ship design is interesting.
