Threatening them is one thing, you'll still need the forces to keep them under control afterwards. It'll take a fair fleet and army to keep several entire species in line.

I'm leaning more towards "big guns and transporters" as the bare minimum. More men would help, but a smart crew would be able to compensate by not making any stupid mistakes.
So, reading the evil overlord list, essentially.

So let me get this straight... you're basically saying a race composed of maybe several hundred individuals and a whopping three ships managed to enslave the entire population of not one, but two entire species that probably numbered in the billions?
Damn, no wonder the Dominion accepted them as allies. Imagine if the Son'a had four ships... they could enslave the population of seven races.

I'm saying that it's possible. They could do it to earth, after all; we have nothing that could touch them.

Son'a ship have crews that seem largely non-Son'a. Try that on Earth with only 3 ships and a small number of Son'a , and we'd be the slavers.

I think you're underestimating our desire not to be incinerated from space.

You're highly overestimating the cowardice of our violent, bloodthirsty and supremely irrational species. A species that routinly bombs itself with little concern for its own future.

Let's give the benefit of the doubt and assume the Tarlac and Ellora races were passive and easily subjugated because they did not want to fight back against scary face-pulled jerks with awesome guns. Regardless, how does this change the fact that it's been officially stated several times in DS9 episodes that the Son'a have multiple colonies, outposts, and ships aiding the Dominion? Are you saying that both Sisko and Weyoun lied about all of that? I'd not be surprised if Weyoun made it all up about the Son'a having a larger presence, but I find it hard to believe that Starfleet would lie about "manufacturing Ketrecel White in the Son'a colonies in the outlying areas near Cardassia and the Bajoran wormhole." (DS9: "Penumbra")

One reason is that I doubt that the Federation would let the Son'a get away with all that crap, considering the Son'a are based around the Briar Patch, which was established to be between Federation and Klingon space - an area of intense Starfleet interest. The Klingons would be even less inclined to tolerate an upstart 'empire' so close to their own space.

Starfleet wouldn't even lift a finger to help Bajor, what make the believe they care about the Son'a victims? The Klingons wouldn't care unless they pose a threat to them or are foolish enough annoy or interest them.

Not victims, but military threat. The Klingons would care because they want to conquer those worlds for themselves.

If they were as small and weak as you make out, Starfleet would barely even notice their presence. Even if they were a threat, Starfleet still wouldn't care; Prime Directive.
The thing about the Klingons taking the worlds is there needs to be a reason to fight for it, otherwise it would just be a waste of their time. The people never made a spactacular impression and Cardassia has shown homeworlds aren't always rich in resources.

I'm starting to get the impression no one watched the DS9 episode Penumbra... or DS9 in general...

Seen it, seen them all. Been a while, though.

It should end the debate of the Son'a being a small band of three ships or a star spanning empire then, because it's clearly stated in that episode (more then once) that the Son'a presence is far larger then three ships.
Anyway... this thread was about ideas for the Son'a in FO, not to debate the military size of their species. I still vote for a small yard destroyer unit with some sort of pulse weapon
