whats so wrong with turtleing?

Like I said:  It's Fleet Ops, not Turret Ops.

Turtling makes the game draaaaag out.  Turtling is fine and even necesssary sometimes against AI, but against humans it's just ... boring and makes people feel like they are having their time wasted.

Right now Perimeters are a great deterrent, but even they go down to large groups of Cruisers.  They are there to make an opponent attacking your mining or expansion have to kill the turret FIRST or risk losing vessels.  If they don't attack the turret they are likely to lose some ships, while if they do attack the turret, the miners live long enough for help to arrive.

  Giant Turrets Suck.

Warp was mainly discarded to have turrets make sense ... now there is a great anti-turreting-atmpsphere.

Weird  :shifty:

just a thought but it sounds like a great idea until someone uses it against you and the you wonder out loud to yourself, what the heck was I thinking?

HOLY SHIT!

I've never seen anything like that from a tortoise!  :o

I know that feeling, you know just cruising along and then BAM! fleet gets raped by a never ending wall of turrets and stupidity. We need to find a picture for people who spam out units... that ones got to be epic....

And by the way awesome!!!! Episode V: Turtles Strike Back

in my view, any tactic is a good tactic so long as it defeats ur enemy. (so if u cant beat a turtler, or are struggling to beat a turtler then obviously the turtler is using the right tactics, whether u hate the tactics or not)

sadly I have to agree.  :sweatdrop:

I can still hate the tactic though.  mainly because it draws the game out to be hours long...

I agree as well.  I find massive turtling, where half your income is going into turrets, to be an unimaginative strategy, especially if that's all you do all the time.  It means you're not sure what units to use, or are afraid of attacking yourself, etc.*[sup](See Below)[/sup]

It usually doesn't drag the game out for me, because there are tons of anti turtling ships out there.  The Serka, susa, B-5 battlecrusier, C-17, A-26 bomber, and many more ships will destroy large banks of turrets quickly.  But I definitely feel like I've wasted my time because I could have done the same against the AI.  Why play a game where all I do is take out stationary units that my opponent can't even control?  And why would you as the turtler want to make banks and banks of turrets you can't even control? :P

Turtling doesn't work very well in FO against other people, but I find that most people do it when they're still learning.  Again, it works great against an AI that walks right up to them like lemmings.  But when I play against someone stacking tons of turrets, all I do is move in, blow up one turret, move out and repair.  Move in, blow up one turret, move out and repair.  After I whittle down the turrets, I take on the very small fleet he has, and it's gg.  Sounds like an exciting game, doesn't it? :D

*And hopefully no one reading this takes that the wrong way.  "Mal's calling me unimaginative and afraid!  He hurt my feelings!  He's so mean! :crybaby:"  Calling a strategy unimaginative is not a personal attack against people who happen to use the tactic.  Just like the lady who spilled coffee on herself and sued McDonald's because she didn't know coffee is hot wasn't a complete idiot.  .....Errrmm...bad example. :ermm:  Just don't take it personally, Ok?!

You know? I'd get sued for assault and battery if I ever met that lady.

Fact of the matter is some people are more defensive than offensive, so a good way to use a turtle strategy is expand yourself a little, place turrets at choke points, use creeping tactics, etc. I do hate it when there are a few million turrets around a  base but if there at a strategic point then it makes some sense, especially if its a supply line.

Personally I build a fleet and don't do to much with it, I enjoy hit run tactics and using small groups of ships (5 or less) to take out a station or what ever. Mainly because it seems more realistic (you're not going to have a fleet of a few hundred ships just rush the enemy). Guerilla warfare, my favorites.
