During the dom war the galaxy class production was sped up, but the insides were redesigned for faster production as battleships rather than exploration ships like the enterprise so no holodeck... a more militarty type design. The excell 1 are no longer made.... there can only be so many left that are not mothballed because they arnt worth the effort of a refit.

Even though i like the reasoning behind it, the increased production from Galaxies can only be found in fan based sources. DITL mentions this, but as fan speculation.

For me it seems no more than logical that an older design would take some heavy losses and prior to the DS9 war, there was a Federation-Cardassian war, Tsenketti-federation war and so on.

There was probably a good number of Excelsior lost at Wolf 359 as well.

Overall the expected heavy losses from a capable, but still older design is why i personally expect few Excelsiors to be around 20 years after the Dominion war.

Did they ever actually say the Excelsior isn't built anymore? It's very likely they're not, but I don't think they ever said they're not building them anymore. They could easily still be building them by DS9-era, but with newer systems instead of the originals straight out of the yard.

Not refits, but modern ships purely of the same exterior design.

you need to go rewatch some ds9 then. i posted two images in reply 30, count the excels, plenty of them, just in that image.

mccoy survived til tng so the galaxy is a mccoy era ship  :whistling:

excelsiors entered production (not experimental stage, production) around the time of ST 6, when we saw the excelsior get a non experimental registry. they were brand spanking new at this time (evidenced by the naming of one of them "enterprise"). everyone loved them, admirals fly around in them and trust them, and they get refits even in ds9 (lakota is canon evidence of their ability to be refitted). the excels in fo were presumably refitted last in the dominion war, and wont be refitted again, but they are still there.

Nobody's arguing that the Excelsior wasn't a great design. It was probably a design ahead of its time.
If we by DITL, which takes its info from DS9TM, the Excelsior stopped production in 2345 (not including the Lakota refit) which makes the youngest Excelsior in the FO universe 60 years old.

I just think it's stretching it to assume there are still dozens/hundreds around to justify the high odds of receiving one in a warp-in.

look at the number of mirandas that lasted until ds9 (where they got slaughtered by the bucket load cos they were the weakest ship in the fleet)

the excel in fo (wartime remember) is in the same position that the miranda was in ds9 imo. after fleetops' story and wars conclude, i'd bet the excels will be low in numbers. and starfleet's most numerous ship will be the akira/sabre
