An aft launcher while the saucer escapes makes sense.

It's also the only practical use for it which is possible at all.

in that image we see the array being active in several places but only one beam will be fired from one spot.

This is true however it is not the only way a phaser can be fired, while the standard phaser shot is to charge the imiter from much of the strip and then focus fire we see instances where a "full phaser spread" is used. This is shown perfectly in nemesis when you see multiple beams fire from the same strip, it is also seen in the episode when the Galaxy class engages 3 K'Vort class cruisers.

Some might debate these being near instantaneous shots and thus not simultaneous however I am fairly sure the shots are fired simultaneously but for varying lengths of time (in the Sovereign example the shots that hit the shields of the Scimitar lasted longer as the Sovereign obviously tried to use them to lock onto the Scimitar and keep a constant profile on it's shield impacts).

Obviously the Sovereign has larger arrays however as I said, we see an example of the galaxy firing 4 or 5 beams at once from its Saucer section. Yet the Saucer section has only 2 Phaser strips, one ventral and one dorsal.

i concede that its perfectly possible (and sometimes better) to fire multiple beams from different points

my point was that i consider the saucer arrays not be multiple little arrays, as they can fire with all their energy together when desired. and my earlier point was that the galaxy saucer arrays are so long because the array can do more killing when its bigger.

Sounds like 'Bigger is better' logic...

with a phaser i'm inclined to agree, otherwise why would they make it long like that and not several arrays like those of the ambassador?

I always wanted to ask you Tyler, from one Tyler to another, is that galaxy in your sig how you wish the Galaxy to appear in flops? ;)

Aesthetic reasons, Starfleet ships almost always have those in mind. The longer the strip, the more emitters there are to contribute to the blast. Stronger through numbers, rather than size (the size is just a side-effect).

Yep, my ideal Galaxy.

we will have to agree to disagree on that.  :whistling: i prefer to think the large array kicks more bottom.

Agh.... stupid buildable galaxy threads!  Why wont it die? DIE! I SAID, DIE! Galaxies are not buildable for a reason. It is the 25th century! A galaxy Evo might be built once in a great while, but not standard galaxies any more. Spend your posts on a more worthwhile subject. Because this is just the nag that will never be obeyed!

*cough* nobody was arguing about having a buildable galaxy,

we WERE arguing, we always argue, we're trek fans, its our sport, just not about building galaxies.

we were talking generally about the galaxy, i was sayings its phasers indicated phasers are better when bigger, tyler was disagreeing and saying the phasers were comprised of multiple little elements.

you should have read the posts before you unleashed the fury that is caps lock.

Wow he was devastated. HAHAHAHAHA. Sorry. It's cool, we often all get emotional on the subject, I even changed sides on this one from 2005 until now, lol. But I am inclined to agree with Tyler, however I feel that size is a factor, other elements in the construction of phaser arrays and the power they generate are more from being refined and designed more efficiently than raw size.
