Why is there a cap on the number of Veterans that a player can have?  And why such a low number?

it is there to prevent you (or your enemy) from getting too many veterans, as they are usually more than double as strong as the normal ship for no costs and it ist very hard to fight back against a fleet of vets..
(imagine yourself fighting abainst a fleet of artillery range excelsiorII veterans^^)

ok the first and most obvious answer is balance.

Also does make sense.

Veteran status isnt only about how clever the redshirts are. Its also about new tech.

Akira for example, it gets new torps at veteran, starfleet aint made of torps, it only has limited supply per sector, so starfleet wont let your sector hog all the fancy gunz. So limited vet slots.

And likewise, not everybody can be the best captain - look around you, is the world filled with geniuses? Right.

The Veteran ranks are especially powerful in online gaming.  You really wouldn't want any more than we have.  A good example of this is Boggz's game with butters.  Butters had at least 2 vet vorcha and a vet sang.  Once he got them, he was pretty much unbeatable.  Another way to think of it is that veterans are "hero" ships.  Every vessel can't be the Enterprise E or Voyager or the Defiant under Worf's command.  And if you raise the cap, then Veteran ranks are no longer special, because a fleet of ships can now attain it. :)

yep :) we wanted to have some kind of "hero style" for veterans. And just like in real life, heroes are rare

But if you get that powerful anyways, isn't the game already over?

Doesnt really make sense in terms of a ship then.

A vet is a combat experience person or crew, which is why there is confusion on the cap since anyone that has enough combat experience is naturally a vet and in turn a hero.

I'm pretty confident real life disagrees with you Kestrel. How many McArthurs or Pattons do you know? ;) And how many Nelsons?  :woot:

usally so that is a good point but you can reach a critical mass with vets to where you opponent cant do anything.

Just to repeat Dircome, it's still possible to win with the current system, and people have.  Where the cap is set now is pretty reasonable.  It also gives you the chance to keep fighting and reach your veteran cap as well, evening the scales.  If it were unlimited, or was higher, you probably wouldn't be able to do that. ^-^

all ships can reach officer status, which is pretty cool, they get some fancy tech at officer.

Double gold bar is very strong.

Vet = picard's ent d
Double gold = phoenix under maxwell.

Both experienced, but picard is better. U cant have a fleet full of enterprises lol

Because you know that if SF had that many foreheads reflecting light they wouldn't need phasers anymore.

What does that have to do with anything?

Pretty sure it's a joke ....

Vets are incredibly powerful in online play, TCR.  That should really be all the explanation needed :D
