When the Feds are restructured for a later version, it should be from the top down, not bottom up.  After all, the smaller vessels are support ships.  They are supposed to be the after-thought, to fill in what is needed.  So at the beginning of the game, the Feds can build these support vessels which fill their own niches, but they lack the keystone which needs placement at the top.  That's what makes flagships so important to the Federation.

And the Fed early game is fine.  It is their late game, where they get creamed.

So just cream the opponent in mid-game with heavy investments in defense.

But remember, playing against the Dominion (and probably the Noxter), there's nothing like a few Defiants to keep the bugs off your capital ships. God, that ramming attack is annoying endgame...

Can i make a point no one seems to remember? Torpedo weapons are primarily good against battleships, and pulses are primarily good against destroyers. That means that enemy battleships (and stations too i think) are gonna last much longer against defiants and you're gonna take more losses. Sovereigns on the other hand can deal with small ships well (sp ability) and also large vessels due to tis torpedo complement.
