Plasma Coil was ment to be a support ability, damaging multiple ships and aiding your fleet a little. It was not ment to be a nuke, thats not Federation like either way. The balancing changes should underline that.

I have a few ideas to help against the [glow=red,2,300]Plasma coil[/glow]!
1. Split your fleet of small ships to 2, 3 or even 4 fleets and attack separate locations.
2. Keep a watchful eye for incoming ships when attacking an enemy's minning expansion.
3. Always spy and see what your opponent is building (Norways in this case) so you first attack Tritanium ships at base.
4. Don't stay for long! Destroy a couple of their ships before retreating. I know it's tempting to stay!
5. Send a small hit and run fleet of crap ships to divert your enemies ships from their base, and swoop in from the other direction when they're far away!
6. When you see Norways, press the "e" button (or explore) so your ships go off in different directons. Once their far enough appart from each other, retreat!
Hope this helps for some of you that have exploited (by me
)!

Good advice, I especially like the "e" button one: hadn't thought of that (going in the guide now
)

You mean I actually thought of something that would work?!!
Glad I could help! Sounds like fun making guides! If only I knew more.

And maybe sometime you will make a guide! The point of the guides was to spark creative discussion and ideas. They're tried and true strategies that have been tested constantly in multiplayer. They're nice to have because people who are stuck against a certain race can read the guides and get some ideas.
But this was never about a handful of people simply handing down a large portion of what they've learned. It's about people thinking up crazy strategies and testing them. I will play games with Dominus where the objective is not to "win", but to test out crazy ideas. Sometimes we'll say what we're planning beforehand, and sometimes we'll try to surprise each other. So when we lose it's no big deal, because half the fun was trying out some stupid idea and all of a sudden finding that it works really well or it fails miserably.
My dream is to see all kinds of people doing these sorts of tests, sharing their ideas, and having everyone learn from them. I would love to see a hundred full guides on the Dominion, not just my own. Sharing cool thoughts like pressing "e" and using search to scatter my ships. I've never thought of that. And now I'm going to test it over and over to see if it will work in multiplayer. This is how the community is going to get better, the games more exciting. By everybody constantly tinkering and dreaming up new strategies. I think it's a much better dream than "da feds needz a boooost!"
Seriously. Go find someone who is online around the same time as you, make them your buddy, and play speed games where you play till someone says "that's game" (your fleet is wipped out and it's clear you can't win). Then do it again. And again. And again. Speed games kind of take both the thrill of victory and the pain of defeat and numb them a bit, because it's more about honing your skills and trying things out than about the scoreboard. I find I learn a lot more from them, too. So go and test stuff and post on it!

Plasmacoil will still be effective against small groups of vessels (in fact its more effective against single vessels now then it was in 3.0.5a). Just its ability to send whole fleets to doom got removed, as it was never intended to be that way

Does that mean it's weaker or it has a smaller area of effect?

They have already said what they will do, it will do specific damage in an area and that damage will be equally distributed to all the vessles in the field. So that means that if only 1 vessle is there it will recieve high damage but if there are a lot of vessles there, each will recieve smaller ammount of damage. Its a good solution IMO

hm, a nuke doesnt fit to the feds, but would actually fit to the klingons, but only of course in some nerfed way

I personally would have left a small (about a third of a scouts hp) nondevided fraction of damage, otherwise that weapon does not make any difference to distributing 10 0,5sec shots to 10 vessels. IMO this takes any advantage off the weapon. But this is just my opinion. Ant it's at least loads better than before.

Why build Norways when you can build Canaverals?
