Aren't they humanoid? I'd check the guide but I can't get onto it.

Xeno Biology: These metalic life forms are very cunning. These small creatures depict the appearence of a Spider or Arachnid. Their form made out of an advanced substance called biosteel, allowing these creatures to survive in even the most corrosive enviroments. Biosteel is the only known metal with the ability to naturally regenerate like human skin. But this biosteel is durable and strong enough to where the entire exoskeleton is constructed of this material. All of these Arachnid stand on an average of 18 to 26 inches in height, varying in diameter between 4 to 6 feet including the legs. There are no known genders of this race, since the only known way of reporduction for this race is either self replication from another arachnid, or replication from the motherships themselves. All arachnids have their own energy core that gives them the ability to operate. Though they depend on consuming energy from outside sources in order to survive.
Their ships are like themselves, made from biosteel. But these ships can provide the necessary energy to survive, but use of various special abilities can cause a massive drain in energy. And since only minimal energy is available ontop of the energy feed systems (aka their life support) and other systems, energy recharge rate is extremely slow (less than one point per minute). Many Stations that have large energy cores can provide energy to nearby ships, but once a ship is out in the field, its erergy regain rate is as slow as a slug.
These creatures often live in dense swarms and hives aboard vessels (i.e. a ship the size of a saber would have nearly a thousand aboard). These creatures do have transporter technology allowing them to swarm other ships. Capturing ships gives them a great boost of energy. And energy is all they want from other ships so that they keep alive. But, thanks to the fact that they can replicate, recrewing is a matter on every ship.
Okay, that was a bit of fun. Now, for the race's construction tree. I believe that there would be four yards, and one research facility (since very few of their ships have a special ability, and stations other then the Radar Turret would have only energy rechargers as their special ability). Their ships would be very selective to their role, meaning that they have minmal strentgh outside of the role they are listed (i.e. a Strike Cruiser would not be durable enough to act as a defense cruiser). Overall, spamming is necessary since these creatures always think of effectiveness in large numbers (i.e. a "Defense Cruiser" on its own might be able to take on a destroyer, but it would take at least six in order to take on a "Equal" class of another race). A lot of their ships are expensive, but quick to build. Ships made for defense would be much more expensive than a similar class for offensive purposes.
One unique feature that I can think of is that their turrets are not stationary, they can be towed around by the Utility vessel (aka. their construction ship. Also they'd be the first to have a medium range tractor beam, without draining any energy). One thing that they praisingly also achieved is that their freighters carry twice the average load of resources (Instead of 150/100, its 300/200). This is because they have a very expensive economy.
sounds a bit like the shivans from freespace. they certainly know how to fly their ships and how to create lovely big targets for intercept fighters of the GTVA. anyhow, this biosteel, i assume its like ordinary steel? then one would say that these lifeforms no matter how small will weigh in from a couple of kg to a few hundred tonnes?

"Iconians and Ciadan" - "Tholian".
I see the similarity in the names... did you start looking for that before I remembered to add the quote?

Yeah sorry! They are a good non-humanoid race, but i don't think they were very powerful

4 of their ship could destroy a vulcan cruiser, at least 10 suliban ships, cripple an nx cruiser and be able negotiate all within a moments notice, they were powerful and are xenophobes. but it seems to lack it in the 24th century though seeming as sisko got tholian silk scarf for his gf, yates.

That little 'Tholian web' ability isn't exactly weak, either. Not very practicle, but still dangerous.

i dont consider that canon but its the start of the mirror universe and so that tholian weapon may have never been invented in the st universe. no proof to if they did or not.
even so the web ability is very strong.

I meant in as a galactic presense. You right that they only get a passing mention later on. Do you think their ships would have been powerful vs shielded ships of the enterprise era (Klingons)?
They are spidery! Mmmmmmm!

They were a known power up to around the TOS Era, after that is when they became a minor power.
ENT Vulcans were very advanced for the time and I think they were shielded.

I would realy like some sort of parasitic race to feature (not as a full race) that would go after technology or biomatter (I like the flood from Halo).
Q: If a breen/andorian and a tholian hugged would they explode because of the temparture diff of their homeworlds? (I am an idiot

If they were exposed for too long to cold, they'd crack. They can only stand it for a while. Assuming Breen and Andorians are cold-blooded.

No, I don't think so. I was just being silly...but they may have got BBQd (throw another breen on the tholian!)
