As I remember it Data came up behind a Romulan, used nerve-pinch, and after the guard fell down Spock came behind him and said, "Most impressive."

What does it matter that Spock was on the mission? Data did the nerve pinch without assistance.

Yes, well, the mission took place on the Romulan homeworld, and the mission required stealth, what better way to do that hten to get Spock to teach Data the nerve pinch.
