I've always wondered about this...

i think there are more than enough examples on both sides of this issue... bottom line is... its a piece of fiction... its not real... stop trying to make sense of every little thing and just enjoy it!  if you prefer to read scientific journals on warp theroy and particle physics then do so... i like star trek just the way it is... inconsistant and full of scientific holes!

truth be told... star trek has always been more social commentary than scientific commentary.  ponder than as you consider that the original series transporter concept was purely to avoid the expensive or repetitive shuttle landing sequences,  genius.

We are enjoying it. We know what Star Trek is, we just like little discussions like this.

hey... meant no offense... just find it helpful to remind myself of those facts when i get too caught up in the "wtf is red matter?", or "why don't they always do that!?", or "what is the point of cloaking when everyone knows how to detect it?" or my personal favorite... "why dont the borg assimilate cloaks?"

why dont the borg assimilate cloaks?!

The main argument is they didn't want the Borg to be invincible.  The theoretical argument is the Borg seek perfection.  If one cube needs to cloak to do its job (and that usually isn't necessary) it shouldn't be doing that job, anyway.

so why does the cube have 57 phasers, 130000 drones and ablative plating?  if it needs those things to do its job... maybe it shouldnt... maybe the borg would just sit at home playing parcheesi if they had that attitude...

the borg assimilate technology and biology to creep ever closer to the perfection that they envision comes once all cultures, science, and genetics are combined, controled and used for one common purpose.

the borg want cloaks... they just like to spend so much time looking in the mirror pondering their perfection that they are afraid they wont be able to see themselves anymore... LOL

I think, technically, Worf used to have an equal.

James T. Kirk, the man Riker wants to be.  Gets the women he wants, kicks the asses he feels like, wins the battles he wants to...

In fact, I might say Kirk has a leg up on Worf.  Kirk could make Gorn-slaying cannons out of random detrius on a hill.

Really the Borg should have small phase cloaked vessels with adaptive stop-anything shields and transport-assimilators (using the idea behind transporter/replicator to instantly assimilate.)  The massive ship idea was to make them these big scary monsters, it was due to traditional army style thinking. Borg would be much better suited to guerrilla tactics, with large structures and vessels only for defense of assimilated planets.  Just imagine a few hundred thousand small borg vessels flying through an atmosphere, but that would be near impossible to stop and would have likely ruined the series. That's my take on the Borg, they're intended to be more of a big scary storm (actually likened to a storm by an alien in a Voyager episode) that occasionally comes through and is hard to stop (thus forcing progress with technology and tactics) than an actual conquer the universe completely faction. Worf beating the Borg with simple weapons is just to get in some nice sword fighting action once in a while.

That leg's coming off quite soon...

Worf didn't get fatter (and remain equally bald) as he got on in years.

Kirk got the women, Riker got the leader of a planet. Plus Riker had a beard, Kirk had eyeliner.

Kirk got the woman who would be God.  The maker of the Genesis Device.  I think that's bigger than the leader of a planet.  :)

Not to mention his unending litany of flings.

Worf, however, very rarely had his shirt vanish.  That's a plus for the Son of Mogh.

The maker of the most brutal, heartless and sadistic weapon of mass-destruction ever created? Hardly something to brag about.

Why was the Genesis Device "the most brutal, heartless and sadistic weapon of mass-destruction ever created"?  :sweatdrop:

Well, not everyone is a fan of the social commentary of Star Trek. Since Star Trek takes a very one sided view of the world, there are bound to be quite a few fans who dont care for it. That is why others focus more on the technological, graphical, or character development of the franchise, and ignore completely any social commentary... I will never, ever watch Who watches the Watchers ever again for that reason..

And i think points arguing the borg at this juncture may be pointless. We still dont even know if the borg survived, although i certainly hope they did. However, since it is likely a series or movie will never be made in the prime universe ever again, we'll never know..

Well, maybe get involved in the FO timeline then :P . The Borg survived there - well, they were harmed a lot, but they are around.... waiting... reaching, nanoprobes at the ready :assimilate:
