Galaxy Should be Buildable
What's your favourite episode? How is romulan ale brewed? - Star Trek in general :-)

Really good news, but it's a shame TNG ships like the Galaxy are still going to be a middle of the road ship.
To me, the Galaxy should be a shield tank class that hold the line. As we saw in the Dominion war, they did a very good job as a heavy hitter and holding the lines at the Battle of Cardassia.
The Warbird, on the other hand, didn't seem to do so hot compared to the Galaxy. The flagship, D'Ridthau was in fact destroyed when the Romulan fleet lines began to collapse.
So the Galaxy should be holding fleet lines vs the Warbird.

I personally think that the Galaxy would be nearing the end of it's life span. It WAS a monster, but never meant for war. It was not built as a war ship. It is large , ungainly, and slow. FO takes place many years after all the movies and shows (~20yrs, I think?). Galaxy chassis were retired. No more would be built. There were only like 8, I think, when the Dominion War started.
I think the Prometheus should be in. It is a sleek warship, fast, modern, attractive, and CANON! they are simply ignored for reasons usually dealing with MVAM. Well, we can always say MVAM SUCKED and so starfleet operated them without it. It is still the fastest, best armed warship in the TNG/Voyager era. It had regenerative shielding, quantums, powerful phasers, redundant power cores, and something similar to Fast Tracking Computers or ADAI. ( source: memory alpha {The Prometheus-class was designed with an unprecedented level of automation, and, combined with its advanced tactical systems, was one of the most powerful combat ships in the Alpha Quadrant}) I think it is bizarre that the Federation would actually BUILD a prototype ship, and abandon using it. They spent YEARS researching and building this ship, to say NAAAH...
LOL RIIIIGHT.....

i to like to see the prometheus. maybee let it change from defence/allround profile to offence profile when MVAM is activated?

I think you are selling the Galaxy very short. She is a real SF behemoth. Ad to that the refits of things like Quantums and regenerative shielding that the Galaxies would get. That spaceframe was built to last.

Well, no offense, but the devs outlook on the Galaxy in the FO universe has always been awkward. They say it's old and being phased out of production, but we see it participate in major engagements during the Dominion War and all over the Federation after the war.
Keep in mind that the Galaxy was also built with a hundred year life expectancy of a hundred years, and should therefore be around at least as long as the Excelsior and Miranda class.
Moreover, we've seen what uprated Galaxys can do. The Enterprise-D in "Yesterday's Enterprise", managed to destroy 1 K'Vort-class battle cruiser and buy the Ent-C enough time to enter the temporal rift. Then in "All Good Things", we see the Enterprise-D again, this time taking on a Negh'Var-class attack cruiser and making short work of it while the second retreated.
Most federation ships don't have much room for improvement as their spaceframe is already filled with equipment. However, take a Galaxy class, remove the family quarters, recreational areas, anything else that's useless for battle and you have tons of volume to utilize for weapons, shields, and armor.

I'm not sure the Devs are entirely fond of the Galaxy at times, but that might be because I (faintly) remember a post quite a while ago where it was left as a Warp-In was a compromise and they wanted to remove it.
Build a Galaxy (or any other similar sized ship) with the same systems as a Sovereign by default, and the latter would be a pointless ship. Just the same ship with a different look and probably a little less space to improve.

Over 12 were around when the war started, around that many were seen in Sacrifice of Angels alone. They were also still building shortly before the war started.
It's faster than its size would suggest, it was shown a couple of times. The same engines as a Soverign would just improve that.

You make a excellent point. The Galaxy has a massive frame, therefor requires a massive amount of power to operate. By removing such sub systems, like recreation, and family habitats, that power in turn can be utilized for shielding and higher phaser output. Not to mention system upgrades that we saw in DS9 and Voyager. Defiants have an impressive phaser array and (I need to start reading up on my star trek tech more) the bi-neural gel packets we saw on Voyager. This could perhaps be a future wish list item. Galaxy class refit optimized for war, say against the Borg.

Basically all of the comments about longevity, strenght, etc is personal opinion. If you want the Galaxy to be a behemoth, you can always customize it as such.
However, Fleet Operations does not take that stance, and the Galaxy has been phased out. It's 30 years past its prime in the Dominion War, and it's quite obsolescent. It's a big ship, designed for exploration, and the Federation has partly moved away from such designs.
Galaxy already gets a refit on its officer rank

The design lifespan thing never made any sense to me, the tech is all that matters so just build a ship with the same class name and look with new tech instead of the original and you'd get the same results as a new ship. How long a certain look has been used means nothing to the tech in the ship, that part's just eyecandy.
Completely pointless.
Completely pointless.

Guys, if you come to think about it, Warp-In is basically building Galaxies, but its more up to chance. If you play your cards right, then you can end up having a good amount of Galaxies. Just think of Warp-In as random buildables

If you want to build galaxies until the next patch heres my warp-in mod:

I still think that even if you MAXED out that ship, it wouldn't be enough. It's space frame and shape were not conductive to war. It is a MASSIVE ship with a skinny neck, and the torpedoes are riiight in the neck area, right between two juicy targets, that skinny neck, and that huge navdef.
Building a ship with only war in mind yields the same firepower in a much more compact, harder to hit, fast moving ship, with sturdier bones. See : Defiant, Sovereign, and Prometheus. Small forward footprint, more compact overall shape. Plenty big for the guns they carry, shape that doesn't scream giraffe. Those shapes also, to one extent or another, try to better hide juicy targets. Or at least make them smaller. The navdef on the sovvie is recessed in a lip and smaller.

We're already aware of FO's agenda with the Galaxy, but we're still happy to bring up some very valid points about the Galaxy's history. Also, the Galaxy was only around for 20 years during the Dominion war.
However, I don't think age is the issue here. Remeber, the Excelsior/Miranda were in service for over 80 years. If age and usefulness were in question, the Excelsior would have been phased out of service long ago. The Excelsior was also a fairly large ship, quite long. If starfleet was moving away from large cruiser designs, they would have produced the Akira/Defiant/Intrepid in favor over the Excelsior class.
I think the issue here is size and cost effectiveness vs age. Starfleet chose cheaper alternatives like the Excelsior and Miranda over bulky ships like the Galaxy. I would say if the Galaxy were buildable just make it cost more resources and supplies but yet make it worth building. They obviously proved their worth in the Dominion war.

kainalu, I see your point, I guess I wasn't looking at from a structural design point of view. I guess even removing the saucer section wouldn't make that much of a difference as well. Since the saucer has it's own propulsion (best of both worlds part 2 I think) you'd be removing additional power generation. I'm just not ready to day goodby to the old girl, TNG was the series that got me into Star Trek.
