Thats why I've not renewed by subscription to STO. It just plain sucks.
When you are 'exploring' space, you are in reality just in a 'sector' map in which you can see an assload of enemy players, but they cant do anything to you nor you to them, and their 'balance' system results in players regularly encountering NPC swarms that can 1shot them, because that particular encounter was balanced for top rank ships.
Then theres the lack of true 'exploration'. Intead you travel to 'unexplored sectors' and fly around to anomalies. Some you scan for 'sensor readings' which you save up like resources, and use to craft 1337 kit at memory alpha, and some give you a yes/no popup for exploring an 'uncharted' system, which results in pre-made random missions, half of which make it clear the system was NOT unknown.
The noob level starting un-explored area is right nearby earth on the map.
