Heheh...I was a designated marksman while I was in the army. And there is no way on earth I could make a 3km shot, even with the today's sniper rifles, and dedicated sniper traing. In fact, the longest shot I've ever made was 1300 meters...And that was ridiculous.

The effective range for the mosin nagant is 800 meters. Yes extremely good snipers can fire past the effective range of their weapons but no one has ever done it with a mosin nagant and the furthest ever shot with a kill is only around 2,500meters.

True, but you're shooting at hordes of zombies, not shooting at small squads of soldiers :P

so now you're advocating spray and pray on a horde of zombies with a sniper rifle, just hope you hit 1 of the zombies huddled together? if you're 3km away from a horde of zombies they almost certainly cant see you, and i doubt they have binoculars. so if u ever find yourself 3km away from a horde of zombies, and happen to have a sniper rifle with you, its probably better to head away and put more than 3km between you and the zombies. ie leave them to mill around. why bother shooting 1 and alterting them to your presence?

Wind direction and speed effect the speed and power of the bullet, even if you somehow sprayed with a sniper rifle which i picture in my head as retarded, you would be unlikely to hit anything the wind direction could carry the bullet 1000 meters to the left or to the right or the power of the wind could make the bullet just smash into the ground after 1500 meters since the effective range of a weapon is when the bullet starts dropping anyway and that doesnt take into account the effect wind resistance has on the bullets.

Unfortunately it's not very far from France to Germany ;). And in Resident Evil they took the whole world, I don't think Germany survived that. Well, maybe the Zombies saw Merkel and thought: No brainssss in Deutschland, she's already one of us, we don't have to go there anymore...

Lol, Can't argue with that logic. If I had a choice of armored vehicles though, I'd go with a stryker or m113...More roomy inside.

Honestly, I prefer a solid mid range platform. I'm working on building a AR-15. Though progress is slow due to a lack of funds.

We do have several air bases where I live due to its unique position; however, there are no tanks. They would be completely useless where I live as the bridges (I live in a chain of islands) wouldn't support their wieght.

However, we do have lots of fuel due to my area's position of being a thriving port, and loads of big freight trucks that can potentially kill zombies by the thousands :P

Completelyofftopic: During last year's veteran day celebration, we have a 20-gun salute with 5 AR-15s, or something that looked a lot like them. The gun salute was too quiet (I wouldn't be surprised if they had suppressors on; there's a lot of wildlife here that's easily startled by sound) and one of the guns jammed

i wouldnt want a tank to deal with zombies. ignoring the fact that i dont know how to drive a tank, and most non military people probably dont know either, a tank is slower and louder. and when it breaks down repairs are gonna be a lot more difficult. plus you really should have a separate gunner, and most people wont know how to load or fire a tank's main weapon. plus the main gun will have limited ammo.

i'd prefer a light truck or something. something that drives reasonably similar to a normal car, but can carry food and survival stuff.

Who needs to fire a Tank gun? Just drive over them. It's not like they can bite you.

still need to know how to drive a tank. and repair it. and god help if they act like the zombies in halo and smash the lid of your tank. tanks arent very fuel efficient either. and you can bet nobody is gonna be bringing in new supplies of fuel if they are zombies.

many more people can drive cars than tanks, and repairing cars is known by many mechanics, and the instructions can be found in many books, like the haynes manuals. plus in a zombie attack car fuel would be left around as zombies arent interested in infrastructure (going by the common depictions). petrol/diesel will be found in other cars, in petrol station tanks. in delivery trucks etc. its still finite, but at least with few people using it (assuming most are now zombies and a few are survivors like in most depictions of zombie attacks) the fuel will last longer than for a tank, also cars use less. ups your chances of survival.

it would be more wise to base your survival tactics on avoiding zombies, rather than engaging them, as they will have vastly superior numbers (more than 90% of the human population as depicted mostly).

If you go for fuel, so will other survivors, many of which probably have guns. There's also a limit to how much can be repaired, good luck repairing a collision with a lamp post with an instruction book. Fuel and damage is gonna screw you eventually, either way.

I never said avoidance wasn't the best survival idea, I only mentioned something Tanks can do that's an advantage over cars; you can drive over zombies and blockades and don't have to worry about bites (heavy armor and no large and easily breakable windows).
