For which purpose? If you just want to find out more I recommend to check the various print magazines. They are reporting heavily on the StarCraft 2 topic. The last thing that I heard was that Activision-Blizzard stopped negotiation with the Korean Star Craft league as their demands were plain rediculous.

well from what i know we have some starcraft players in fleetops so I was wondering if they could give me a quick summary how starcraft 1 is, do they expect great things from 2, do they think it will meet expectations, do you think the storyline will be good/better/okay/bad?  how was the story in 1, etc. :)

played SC1 for years like Armada, freespace, AOE and quake 2 and still do, but SC2 i wont go after until they get rid of this anti piracy DRM. fine, they want to protect their games, but piracy has never been stopped and so this measure is doing the opposite to the intended effect. You want an expectation off me? then for Bllizard to remove the DRM before release date on 27.7.2010 so i can play the game. in the long run i dont see the point unless they have licensing of the game for several years or up to decades. in any case the game will be abandon ware or released under GNU for a small price for modders to use.

So what did they demand?

From what I've seen SC2 will be sold in three parts  - 1 for each campaign - and to play online you'll have to pay some 25 euro per month. Storyline of SC1 was fun - Broodwar got a bit more dull - and storyline for SC2 will probably be nice since they've invested so much time.

Gameplay wise I'm not too thrilled about SC2 as it places such a huge emphasis on clicks per second as far as I know. I guess the worst part is that pay to play aspect.

SC2 will never replace SC1 outside of this part of the world (Europe and NA) though as SC1 is cheap (or free...) and doesn't cost anything to play online. It also runs on low spec computers and is balanced, while SC2 will most certainly not be balanced out of the box (just like SC1 wasn't).

That's what I had heard a year ago, but you can now pre-order it and it's only one game to purchase and it's reasonably priced for a new game.

Not sure where you've been told that but I've been taking part in the SC2 beta for the past several months and we were assured that the rumours of it going pay to play are merely that... rumours.

It's going to be the first RTS to feature a non chronological story line, mixing RTS and RPG, meaning that you will be faced with choices throughout the games missions which will affect the rest of your game.

Hm, everywhere I look it says the campaigns are still supposed to be released in installments. Aye, you're right about the rumors on pay to play - I don't know whether to trust them or not, but knowing Blizzard/Activision I wouldn't put it past them.

As for RTS's with mini missions and being non-chronological etc, there are others too that do that, and in the end SC2 has a linear storyline as well, so nothing revolutionary there. Storytelling has remained the same for thousands of years after all :D

Starcraft 1 and SC:Broodwar are great games and I highly suggest at least playing through the campaigns once. The one thing I really enjoyed about it was how different the three races feel when you play as them and how balanced the game still feels even though their units and tech trees are radically different. Multiplayer is hard nowdays though since noob tolerance is rather low on Battlenet. If you can find a group of friends who aren't godly Korean league players though then Starcraft multiplayer is a blast.

I've played the SC2 beta, and I can say the game is radically different from SC1. First off it's much more fast paced and feels like an arcade RTS. The races play totally different from their SC1 counterparts (The Protoss for instance used to build up slowly and be good at turtling, now I can unload their structures in no time and spam Dark Templar and Carriers). It could be the fact that it's just beta, but SC2 feels like it's lost the charm of SC1. I still think it's fun as hell at times, but prefer Fleet Ops over all.  :shifty:

i have also played starcraft 2 beta,  there are lots of similarities to sc1, but a serious lack of unit types, there were more units and technologies in sc1. They will probably add new stuff in 2 eskp packs.
I feel that most of the good strategies will be invented quite early, in a first year or two. BTW Graphics is amazing. Battle net will also look great, but the price of the game is too high for my taste.

like any game going through beta, realistically the game would be looked at and several suggestions taken up as well as new stuff that wont be seen until its actual release, almost all game makers hold something back when putting out a beta. a beta is just to test the game engine out and to see whose machine can run it, a global wide systems check. a few testers may have give blizzard a few ideas to work with they may have missed. but i know better, if blizzard are serious about this game then i would say for certain they have something held back to make the game worth buying and playing.
