filefront closing?
Want to say something off topic? Something that has nothing to do with Trek? Post it here.

Right just to let you all know whats been going on, IKS and the others have been working away and they now have the ENTIRE mod content from A2files backed up and safe (phew!) and they're working on setting up a new site for us called ModNetwork, which, once completed, will hopefully become a community hub like A2files was.
Just to repeat myself and make sure no one misses it, a temporary forum has been set up for us here:
A2 Mod Community Transition Forum
To be used just as the FF ones were, at least until we have something more permanent.
Freyr and the other staff members have been talking with various site leaders and the various modders, and we've all agreed that its best to try and keep the community together, to avoid it fracturing across different sites.
Things seem to be going slowly but surely and according to Freyr "we have more options than we know what to do with" so with a little luck the community should survive this to mod another day

It might just be too late... Is there no way to message all the A2 Files members before the 30th?
And what made Ziff Davis shut everything down right now? Is the deadline two days before April 1st so that it can't be condfused with a prank?
It'll be... interesting to see how this turns out.

personally i have 1 question and 1 idea
question, why is file front closing? ive never really used it, but im usually there a few times in a month, did the file front people just not want to do it anymore? and on such short notice............ jeez
idea: okay look guys, fleet ops is the pretty much the most popular mod, and site, so i say this, the armada files guys, talk to fleet ops team, and at the least, fleet ops become the temporary home, this would allow, a tighter nit community, (of a2 modders and other stuff) that would be beneficuil for a few reason
#1 its not dependent on a non controlabele level (ie is run by a2 modders, so we will know about changes more, and the risk of it all of a sudden closing is low)
#2 it brings other moders to fleet ops, and fleet ops people to other mods, a better enviroment
#3 im sure the fleet ops team could use some more people to help run the site, so they can focus more on modding, while i would rather do this in the fleet ops (current) family right now, to create a chain of command, of people who report up to another, to another, and then to the team, if fleet ops hosted a2 files for a while, itd probably be right to include an a2 files admin
now, also we could be a temporary host, or maybye host them for longer, they could have there own page, fleet ops is still the focus, but the main thing is, it combines everything into one centered group, we have the most people here, and with a2 even more, and that will help bring people back to armada
thats about it.....

I don't think that would be a good idea.
Primarilt because many people just wouldn't come here. I know FlOps is a very popular mod, but (believe it or not) there are a lot of people out there who just don't like it. They don't want to be reliant on FlOps for their mods (some people deliberately avoid using even Patch Project), so they would be dead against FlOps.net being the central community site.
No, this website is about this mod. The community needs a "neutral" site that does not focus on one mod alone.
The A2Files team have had a number of offers, and there are a lot of options open to them. Everything will be ok.

I definitely wouldn't like hosting A2 filefront here. It would definitely change the ENTIRE community really radically. Plus, I don't know if the admins/moderators would want to have to pay for the extra storage space. It would probably be a lot with all the mods there are out there.

yea, the armada community needs an independent site. we couldn't host all those files anyway. the only thing we will do is to support a new 'armada2files' site in every way possible.

The forums are back up. There's a site administrator claiming that he doesn't know why the forums are back online (the post is at http://forums.filefront.com/battlefield-mod-forgotten-hope-479/announcements.html) but the place is in a general uproar. Mixture of amusement, irritation, confusion, and panic; some enterprising folks are trying to back up the important threads to a secure location, while others are convinced it's all a joke and are contemplating whether to return to business as usual or quit the site in protest.
Hopefully we'll know what's going on 24 hours from now. I can't make much speculation.

Whether FileFront is truly closing up shop or not, I'm with you. If it's really going offline, that's very sad, and if it's some sort of prank, screw them.
Thanks for your gumption.

if it's a joke, then i guess that would have been the lamest april fools joke on the internet i have ever seen. i don't believe it has been a hoax, that now would result in a big image loss. still, strange that the forums are now working again for no obvious reason. the server seemed to have been completely wiped before

I have talked to someone who has contacts with filefront and from what they have been told this is no joke. What is going on nobody knows but either way, the new mod site is being built.

It is starting to look more and more like a possible sick joke, the whole site seems to be back up and running (even the forums).

Here's a question; Why is everyone so concerned with filefront closing? Since its creation, it has been a cumbersome, bulky, annoying ad-heavy site, that makes you register for the most mediocre download speeds and services, etc. I would be happy to see filefront close down. And before you all start flaming me for this, I do recognize that filefront is a great pack-rat site. I mean if I need to find a file from an old game, I can find it there. It just takes an ungodly amount of search time (and patience on my part) and then I have to wait for download availability (because I refuse to register for it, much like steam and gamespy because they're horrible services). Still....the good doesn't out-weigh the bad here.
