Hi all people new to Flops, i would like thank you for coming to the community and trying your luck online and taking a brave step into a whole new world but i would also highly suggest you read the post clearly as a lot of you disconnect and quit when we are trying to help as online is not like AI play and you do not have unlimited resources so here are few help and important tips...

Tip 1: (The most important) FORGET EVERYTHING ABOUT HOW YOU PLAY THE AI!!!!!

Tip 2: Get on Teamspeak, even if you don't have a mic it will allow you to listen so you can be taught more easier and would be in 'synergy' with your team

Tip 3: Observe some games, no seriously don't jump in guns blazing and then be shocked when everything in your build order is wrong and you are being advised so...

Tip 4: Try to master only one race at a time, don't switch until you can fully utilize your first race (preferably the Federation as they are the easiest to learn)

Tip 5: Read the god damn guide!!! it was made for a reason and has all the tips, counters and build orders you need. Go through starting strategies in instant action, don't worry about the AI just focus in learning the order and getting it done in quick time! P.S. The Main Page - The Hitchhiker's Guide to Fleet Operations

Tip 6: Seriously listen to the people who are trying to teach you, they aren't telling you what to do to be mean but to help, we want you here and to be part of the community and we started where you did but you will need to listen and learn... Open mind guys (some of you haven't been very open)

Tip 7: If you don't know something or need help, just ask... we will answer one way or another

Tip 8: If being taught a lesson and you don't like it, don't quit the game then disappear from Tunngle, we will more than likely offer advise after seeing how you play

Tip 9: Learn counters and hard counters, Dominion bombers Vs B'rel's aren't cool!

and finally Tip 10: Were are all here for the same reason, a good laugh and fun so remember if your in a team game, be nice to your ally :)

Wow mark, great idea, i mean, after the day we had. going through that will inspire anyone to action.

It would be great if we could setup some kind of 'going through the ropes' thing, or pin this thread, being as we've had so many new people join recently.

AND NOOBS: DON"T DO UNLIMITED RESOURCES (ever) AND THEN COMPLAIN ONLINE ABOUT HOW YOU CAN'T BUILD ANY THING. other than that, just listen when the others try and say somthing to you, when i joined it helped me so much to 'listen and learn' as this game hhas a bit larger of a learning curb.

Just read the Guide, listen, and watch some replays of other games and you'll be fine.

All the best
  Crisis

Ive suggested this about 10 times, in various forms one of them being a welcome/informational "letter" to people who download the game and start it up for the first time, or some sort of resource tab in the game itself for playing/online playing.........

Well...... how bout Taking a list of the counters, a few starting strats, a list of what not to do, and a few good replays, and put them in a pdf and zip file and host it in a thread here, like a little start pack? it wouldn't be that much work would it?

I feel like its important to inform new players how to use resources (tunngle, teamspeak, the forums, the guide) and let them know they are here and can be utilized effectively, rather then to put forth a few good examples.  However adding additional tips to that thread and or message (or whatever else it could be) would be nice.  Or just a full out beginers section of the guide, i could even make a replay on how to download and use tunngle, teamspeak, and the guide if it needed/wanted, ive actually thought about doing that for some time......

there is already a sort of starting section in the guide, but getting people to read it is a different thing, well i don't have many ideas but anything you want to do i would really like to help.

I think maybe a giant START HERE could be helpful

well i created the thread because a lot of noob's do skip the guide and i realised other than the guide it is hard to find anywhere that easily provides any information, instead you have to go through loads of threads on various topics concerning balance to get an idea of what is countering what (without the guide)...

personally i think there should be a whole Noob section where they can ask questions and people can get back to them with answer. To avoid confusion no ridiculous debating of counters (and balanace) would be allowed in it, just clear answers.

also i would suggest it has 6 videos stickied (im sure ray320 can help me make these) and the would be what ray320 suggested in terms of setting tunngle/teamspeak and so on.

then the first would be a starting and simple fed strategy with an explanation as to why you go for that followed another basic one for reach race and explaining the differences.

Now the other races can have varied starts but it would at least give them a rough build order to practice if they are too lazy to read (the guide is a maze of information) and two a basic understanding of game mechanics.

i feel this is essential as most games ease you in to the play style and balance by forcing you through a bunch of basic missions that are tutorials to help you along, however with no missions at the moment this can't be done so people just do random stuff on "instant action" causing online shock :)

P.S. Crisis i waited 3 horus for your butt to come online last night after i got home

Hey, redman, you forgot a tip.

TIP 11: Decloak and attack when Dominus_Noctis tells you too, and don't hesitate :D

but then you need TIP 12 which is "micro better before Dominus_Noctis shouts at you and sees that miner you've just built not mining"

Great so teach them the most lame thing in FO which is Fedroll...and once Warpins get nerfed the ppl become frustrated when they need to deal with real strategies. I vote for a double yard strategy which is nicer even though harder to learn with some Canaverals or Novas mixed in!

Yes you teach them Fedroll as it is the easiest thing to learn, especially for starting out online... I also said stick up for videos for other races so they can learn them as well and it is no different from what the guide teaches, it is just making it video form.

Remember its for noobs to be able to play online with other people whilst learning to improve, it is not meant to be an indepth specialist lesson. That is for them to learn in their own time once they comfortable with one founding strategy so they can play to a decent standard.

P.S. I don't think warp in will be getting nerfed any time soon, it doesn't particularly need it as that isn't the problem with fedroll. It is more a problem of how long it takes other factions to have suitable ships to counter as some races can counter fedroll 1vs1 just fine.

One problem  I see: everything is in English. There are many new(often German) players out there who simply don't understand the guide. Let alone people on teamspeak. I often feel a bit dumb when I have to ask redmanmark 3times what he just said because of his British English :D.
Replays should be fine though. But I must admit, if I were new to the game, I wouldn't want to watch others playing, I'd like to move into the action myself.
So: if you made a short introduction, do it in several languages please. To get some Germans for translation won't be tough, I don't know which other languages are important in the FO community. Elim and sutee tell all Hungarians what to do. Are there any other languages :D ?

nobody can usually understand me as my fan is constantly blowing at me and my mic because my room is always 25 degrees plus :(

as for translations, that is fine and if a person wants to come after to do a version in their chosen language with the footage created for the english one i am more than happy to let them use it but as i only speak english it will be that first.

By the way im sure Dom wouldnt care if the wiki was translated but it is a lot to translate and i don't think he has had any offers :(

oh and finally in terms of jumping in, i like to learn that way too and always have. I have only watched a fleetops replay for entertainment. However lots of the recent noob's can't handle being told what to do and doing it at the same time as their micro aint there yet and the text moves too fast so TS is important or a video for them to see is.

We made michael observe 2 games after he was Fed the first and his order was all wrong. After observing just two games when he played after he was like a new man and even said himself oberving was the best thing he could have done.

Feel free to translate it into German. To be honest, this is the internet. If you don't want to read english, then don't use it. Nowadays it should be common to read, write and speak english.
