I thought it was temporal shields that protected against croniton weapons and the only way that one ship was invincible was because it was out of phase

The Krenim one was out of phase, this one uses different tech though.

The temporal shields only protect you as long as your temporal variance matches that of the weapon that's being fired at you.  If the weapon being fired upon you modulates constantly, multiple shield layers or high-density shields are the best way to stop them.  If you don't have those shield technologies, armor is the way to go.

Pulling your ship slightly out of the space time continuum would protect you against everything and would be more reliable, but you couldn't counter it with anything!

hm, the idea of shield frequencies is rapid polarization of particels, repulling a warhead, ions or whatever. So a weapon with the same frequency as a shield would just pass through (that's what the duras for example got from Geordi and even an ancient BoP became a threat).

Your Chroniton's might act a lot different, though :) It just seems to be the common case in Star Trek that same frequency means "ups!"
