Which race do you like most? What do you like - what you don't like? Discuss it here.

I found this game about a year ago when I stmbled on a replay someone posted to YouTube. I immediately ransacked my box of CDs for the Armada II disk and reinstalled that bad boy after several years of dis-use.

Back then I was limited by a laptop with an stock, inset graphics card and 504MB of RAM, so although the experience was laggy (even against a single AI), I was FLOORED by the quality of this mod; new ships, interesting abilities, detailed models, stronger ships, dynamic races, developed counters, intricate gameplay... the list of positive adjectives preceeding a noun goes on and on.

I had to leave the country for 3 months and was pretty much disconnected from the world (US Coast Guard training) and couldn't WAIT to get back and see all the new changes! And just a month ago I bought a brand new desktop with an HD graphics card and 8GB of RAM. Although I bought Starcraft II, the only thinkg I could think about was how much BETTER my FlOps experience was gonna be.

Soon after, I downloaded Tungle and joined the online MP community and try to play/watch atleast ONE game a night. Even WATCHING games is exciting!

I installed Starcraft II and played maybe 2 games of the campaign and as each race against an AI... and all I have to say is "FUCK Starcraft II." FlOps is the "bee's knees" and I see NO reason to go back and play anything else, at the moment.

To the mods: what you've done to Armada II - one of the shittiest games I've ever purchased - is nothing short of astounding. Other mods for other games may be fun, but considering the raw material you guys had to start with and how much you've improved on it is fascinating, and I thank you for the work you do and continue to do.

I promise to make a donation soon, because if anyone deserves a reward, it's YOU guys!

Thank you so much.

A mod? Fleet Ops? Don't you mean the official Star Trek Armada III?

After playing a couple of my RTS's lately I've come to the conclusion.

Dawn of War 2. Is an intriguing game of micro, there is no real macro. Destroying units is almost impossible if they are well played defensively. But there is no macro or economic engine to the game. Its more like an intricate game of capture the flag.

Starcraft II. Is a game that pretty much entirely lacks micro for most unit types. Battles devolve into who has the better "concave". Has an intriguing macro economic set up that lets you do a lot of interesting things in regards to base control. Honestly a good match of Starcraft II is about as interesting as playing a game of combat accounting against a firm of accountants.

Fleet Operations has a lot of micro in units and has a pretty decent economic set up. Nothing as advanced as how you can control things in starcraft II bu far better than flag capping resources and having them produce without any miners or stations or turrets for that matter.

So I keep coming back every so often to fleet ops. it has a better mix and gives one both macro and micro choices that matter in game play.

I was looking for mods for star wars battlefront 2(old game) at filefront when I saw a filefront for another old game armada 2. Then I saw the most popular mod there was fleet operations I looked at the fleetops website and downloded it . I was blown away by the:ships, stations, gameplay, music, races, and overall quality of the game. and when I realised that the game is a work in progres I was even more astounded by the progress that this mod is still making. The devs have done a great job and are still doing a great job too.

But you should try (if you like 3rd person space sim) the game Freelancer with discovery mod. Its almost like fleet operations.(there's also crossfire, it has better graphics, but I like Discovery mod better, crossfire's multilayer is virtually zero.)

I have Freelancer too. I played the Crossfire and the Discovery mod. They are good mods too.
But a mod like Fleet operations is difficult to see. Fleet Operations is very well worked.

One thing i have to say.

In Fleet operations, you can use the invisible units from the begin of the game to the end.

Starcraft II, you get a detector unit and kills the utility of invisible units. So i ask. Why the need to create invisible units in Starcraft II??? You can use only in the early game, in the late game your invisible unit turns useless.

In Fleet operations, there is the Tachyon Ping, this item balance the game very much because the detection is for a limited time and the area of detection is small. And some detectors you can use only a limited number of pings like Venture Class (3 Pings in a small area).
This turns the Invisible/Cloacked units very useful from begin to end of the game.

If my take on starcraft 2 is correct, cloaked units still have their place even in late game. A detector still only has a finite range and can be killed, in most cases relatively painlessly. Cloaked units are certainly much more effective in early game before cloak detect becomes available, but a surprise attack is always going to be effective if it, uh, takes the enemy by surprise.

Cloak has more use in FO mainly because all the cloaked units in SC2 are more of a support unit.

In Fleet operations, the best detector has 2 seconds of detection and 10 no detection.

In Starcraft II, the detector can detect every time.

You get 5 detectors and the opponent has a difficult if he has cloaked units. This tactic unbalance the game and the cloaked unit turns useless.
You can't pass by turrets undetected, because these turrets hasn't interval of detection like tachyon ping (2 seconds of detection and 10 no detection).

Fleet operations is better and turn the cloaked units very useful. You can pass by turrets undetected because the turrets emits tachyon ping every 10 seconds, you have almost 2 seconds to detect a cloaked ship.

In Fleet Operations the Romulans are masters of cloak.
The Shrike is undetectable by any means when has the ability to counter the Tachyon ping in 100% of effectiveness.

It's a fully useful espionage ship.

So if a race is evolved, this race deserve advantages on the others. For example : The Shrike undetectable by any detector unit. I see it in Fleet operations and no other strategy game.

This kind of game differ one race from another, without unbalance the game, because it, the Fleet Operations is the best mod i ever seen.

i suggest that every once and awhile people should play a game of the original armada2 just to remind themselves exactly how much they have changed the game for the positive.  i did it last year and i had to force myself to finish just one game it was so awful compared to fleetops.

Other thing i love, are the civilian ships flying through the stations. Very nice.

I was killed by these guys  :borg: and I was like  :woot:   I was just enjoying the scenery so much I just didn't care.

I can't believe how cool it is.  This is the Star Trek game of my dreams.  (Except for that 7 of 9 game I dream about  :innocent:)  So until that one hits the shelves this is the one.

Installed smoothly.  Played well on my Vista Home Premium 32 bit, overclocked Galaxy GTX 460, 1920 X 1080, AMD 965 Black Edition rig.  This mod loves all the tech you can throw at it.

To anyone even thinking about trying Fleet Operations order a copy of Armada II as quickly as possible and start playing.  The only regret you will have is that you didn't find it sooner.

Fleet Operations is all that Armada 2 should be!

Like someone said before me, my biggest worry is that the mod become unplayable in some future Windows but with this developer team... I don't thing that's even possible!

Love you guys! you bring to life the best Star Trek game ever!

Hope this topic and all of our words does not end up bringing pressure on you.
