We try to prepare a lot of material much in advance of patches, as an idea might not fit in one patch, but can work in a more far off one.

so am i understanding it right that the runabout replaces the venture class?, or will be an additional ship? (one is an advanced scout in tier 3 for example?)

Nope, it will not be replacing the Venture

Can't we get a tiny clue on the time of the next release? Please , Please, Please.

I think the devs are rightfully wary of making any kind of commitment to a release date. It'll be done when it's done.

a fairer question would be to ask..
there are 612 open tasks to be completed.. for the next release are you intending to complete
A...a few more
B...some more
C...alot more
D...all of them?
it leaves the devs with the ability to be ambiguous and let them not be constrained and pressured, and it keeps your interests and anticipation high.
personally im happy to wait as long as it takes (tho another one of those awesome news updates would be nice)

The devs will tell us what they want to tell us. We just need to be patient.

The patch is done when it's done. I'm pretty sure everyone is anxious for the new version.
I would have loved to have gotten a B-day gift two weeks ago but alas.
There are going to be a lot of changes in the new version (amongst other things profiles) and everything has to be scripted, tested and tested again because the biggest turn-off is a bugged release.
Keep in mind that everyone of the developers is doing this next to a day job or college.
Having said that, i won't complain if i wake up tomorrow and find a new version notification in my mailbox
Hint hint..

Well I was excited while reading through previous postings and saw that Dom had said that they were in alpha testing. Which was back in december. Now i dont know if they do beta testing or anything beyond that but i really enjoyed reading that. It keeps me excited to know that theres a slim chance the next redo could come out soon.

Hi. I made the comment earlier in the post "please, please, please". Looking back I feel a little selfish. I'm just so excited :-), because I have enjoyed the mod to a ridiculous degree. Top respect to all the developers who have taken the time to make it possible. Its even more amazing to think that these people have done this alongside jobs and college
. Seriously to all those who have done this I salute you.

An idea for carriers, why not allow fighters to be buildable as independent units, however on their own they have limited armaments i.e. torpedoes and will need a carrier or starbase to rearm. This would open up the field to great new tactics, and cool Dominion War battles. For instance the Federation the Avalon-class would be the premier carrier; if 36 fighters crashes the game then okay but max that bad boy out! The Akira-class if I recall from the cannon specs that it is suppose to carry 24 fighters. The Sovereign can be an optional carrier with one squadron, which lets be clear is 12 fighters.
Another point of interest, I'm noticing several TOS and TMP ships in the mix, any ideas for multiple tech trees to span the different eras?
By the way, you guys have made an awesome game. Keep up the great work!

Fighters can break the game if you have too much of them. This is about balancing. You do not see 20 torpedo-bays on the Akira class, but just one. So the 5 fighters of the avalon already represent the 32 'real' ones.
But an interesting idea could be: While the avalon is the main carrier, it may dispatch additional fighters to ships with an enhanced shuttle-bay, so the akira and the sovereign might not 'porduce' them, but can receive them, until all places are full. So after a time, you will have a good amount of fighters supporting your fleet.

Actually, that does sound rather nice.
The fighters as independent units idea sounds like all kinds of bad, though. For a start, every (more or less) worthless individual fighter needs a click, a selection slot as well as all its orders.
