Current situation: Steamrunner is warp-in with Tricobalt torpedo.

Steamrunner class - Memory Alpha, the Star Trek Wiki classifies the Steamrunner as a heavy Frigate meaning it is a type of vessels which will be in the thick of the action.
As useful as the FO Steamrunner is, it does not fit the classification.

I would love to see the Steamrunner added as a regular warp-in with Phaser/torpedo weapons and stats between the Excelsior and the Nebula. Perhaps with a passive or special which will make it pretty sturdy for a ship its size.

To replace the Steamrunner as Torpedo vessel we can use the Miranda class.

With the proposed setup we get to see the Steamrunner more often and as a real fighting ship instead of long range bombardment-glass cannon AND we get the Miranda class which is a favorite amongst many.

Exact weapons/passives and specials can be adjusted to the preference of the mod team.
Thoughts/suggestions?

Edit: Cannon instead of canon.

The classification is decades out of date and doesn't account for future refits. A second varient that has a standard combat weapons array maybe, but the artillery Steamrunner is an Armada tradition.

Despite what MA says, I don't recall it ever firing Photons... unless I missed a frame of First Contact.

At this point, the Devs have said that the miranda is too outdated to be used., but I would also like to see the steamrunner as more than artillery.  I think we need a new ship to be the artillery bucket :woot:.

And just because its a tradition doesn't mean that FO can't break it.   ^-^

IMO not a good one, but that's another debate.

I was thinking that since the romulan Generix Frigate refite will be going to way of the dinosaur perhaps we can apply these passives to the Steamrunner.

2x Projectile Weapons: Deals increased damage to structurally weak targets with a defense of 20 or less.

Suppressive Shielding: Decreases the damage taken from pulse weapons by 30 percent.

Since the Steamrunner is a warp-in the balance issues would be non-existant since the warp-in already restricts the number of vessels.

i like the strategy point of view where as concentrating on strategy specials. i would love to see the new orleans and the oberth as warp-ins. :woot:

New Orleans is on route as stated.

I think the Oberth is on the list as map object.

Obereth is a canonfodder ship, but the New Orleans could be an artilary.   I don't think Optec would allow that though.

Why is that?

Edit: Another possible arty ship could be this one: Polaris Class - Specs

Or the Springfield Class: Ex Astris Scientia - Springfield Class Reconstruction

The New Orleans is one of his favorites, all the reason required.

Miranda is a map unit. That is all it will ever be; the devs apparently don't like even avatar specific special Warp-In refits.

I prefer artillery Steamrunner due to being easier to spot when at a distence, making identifying the arty ship simpler. However I did mention a seperate refit that would allow both roles, similar to the Nebula Class varients.

Unlikely, it looks around Miranda age at least.

How about letting it start out as a Heavy Frigate with a possible conversion to Artillery ship (conversion ala the Newton style)

I could live with that, probably with a research requirement or a number limit.

I would like that.  Or even have the artillery upgrade be an avatar specific feature.

Any other suggestions to improve upon the original idea?

Regarding the Polaris, it was shown several times in the DS9 battles so it could be a possible space frame.

What do you think of this design: Niagara Class - Specs
Fielded shortly after the Ambassador and multiple nacelles which is a nice detail.

The Polaris isn't a canon ship, and was never on screen.

I listed the Niagara as one of my favorite ships. What benefits the tri-nacelled design gives is open to interpretation.
