I've got I great idea...........................Make them AWESOME!
Okay that's stupid, but I just thought of something. Why not have a temporal cloaking device, causing the vessel to vanish, and be semi-phased into its current dimensions. They could also have temporal shields, transporters, warp drive, etc, etc.

Just give the Iconians the ability to control Crystalline entities and they'll be perfect.

Temporal shields?
To protect you from what? weapons that haven't been fired yet?... Or weapons that were fired at you in the past?

Huh, never did think about hat. Maybe weapons that haven't been fired yet I guess. Or vice versa, but controlling crystaline entinties sure ould be a cool power.

Maybe Crystalline Entities are primitive descendants of Iconians..?
Just random canon-breaking thoughts.

Hey, this is as good a thread as any to add one Iconian ability I'd like to see: A Gateway. (Imagine that!
) Just like we saw in the show, these can be people movers and it is possible to board starships, like Picard did when he went onto the Romulan vessel. So I propose an end game level gateway station that that sends crew over to any star ship it sees on the map. Of course certain ships like miners and construction ships would be off-limits.
It would use special energy, and would use the crew aboard the station to take over other ships. It would transfer crew continuously at a certain rate, to simulate the fact that a group is traveling through single file. It could be balanced by the fact that there is only so much energy and so many crew that you can send at at time before you have to recrew your station. It could probably be strong enough to take over something like an akira before it has to shut down, but the special energy recharge rate would be very slow. I bet it could be a pretty neat way to steal ships without becoming too overpowered.
It really wouldn't be so different from the Tavara's Marines or how the Borg Matrix Teleport functions. But I would rather not see it as a large group transporting all at once, but a steady stream of crew, if that's possible.

Gateway would definitely be cool - I wonder if it should be just limited to personnel transport. Perhaps you could launch small vessels (destroyers) from one base structure to another for quicker defense, and perhaps even recrew under attack (that would be an interesting unique feature)?
I'd also like to see something dealing with the computer virus - perhaps a more sophisticated version of the one that we saw in TNG
. A probe that can be launched from base structures (or even only the main base) that doesn't immediately kill enemy vessels within range, but shuts down a subsystem, reboots it, and then shuts another ... and then another... and then... if you don't repair the damn ship... KABLOOOOEAHHH!

The probe could be cool too. One thing I've wanted to see is a a long duration drain health ability. Something that drains the hull 1 point per second for 2 minutes, or something along those lines. That could simulate the problems from contact with the probe, and unless you get back to a starbase quick, that ship will explode!
Edit: I was just thinking about how you could do something similar to the intelligence center. It picks a random ship with a spy on board. I wonder if something similar could be done. After "the spy tag is gone", an iconian ability triggers those system failures. Or the ship explodes. The ship could explode too.

Yeah, that could work well. Maybe even some dedicated defensive structures that have these sorts of probes, rather than them being standard armament. I kind of like the idea of at least one faction have various very specialized defensive structures. Maybe one that regenerates special energy in an area, one that disables a certain system for enemy vessels but deals no damage, and another that ... beams crew over !

What I really want to know is how they plan to balance the fact that they need no resources and just gate ships in. I'm guessing it would be like collective connections as a resource. You could probably set the rates equivalent to two moon pairs, but what if your opponent gets 3?
Maybe you get to spend collective connections on resources?
It'll be interesting to see how they balance this.

Well, keep in mind things may change in that respect - and I think we have a chance to influence that too
However, I think a cool balancing system would be "territory" for the Iconians. Perhaps there is one base structure you have to build which has a specific radius in which no more of these structures can be built. These structures increase the rate at which you can get more ships in system. Since you can't build more than one of these structures right next to each other, you have to hold onto the territory, which balances it - the further out you go, the harder it is to hold onto these structures obviously... which is similar to making mining bases etc.

*lightbulb*
Give some ships a Psionic Rage ability, where the crew goes into said rage and drains a ton of their energy into the weapon systems, and the ship goes on an automated attacking spree. It cannot be commanded during this time (computers are handling everything while the crew recovers) and for x number of seconds after. Upside? weapons are 2-3x normal power.
Chroniton Bomb: Depletes some form of chroniton energy (if its used for ship construction, then that) into a massive array to release a massive chroniton explosion at some point on the map. Give visibility to the area for say 5 seconds and deals random amounts of damage to all ships in the area.

We're talking about Iconians, not psychic Klingons...
