Didn't the A1 Nebula have a Point-Defence Phaser?
I'd much rather have the newton popping torpedoes as they hurtle towards my fleet than to go flying off chasing a fleet of things that can kill it because I forgot to change the alert status.
Since steamrunner's seem to get VET so easily (for some people) give it a PD gun. Hell, there's a few ships that deserve one. In fact, now that I think of it, I'm kind of surprised that this type of weapon isn't more prevalent! What's up with that?

firstly the vanilla a1 and a2 nebula as you said had a point defence phaser to knock out incoming torps.
but fleetops doesnt have that feature.
im not decided on point defence, they do seem logical. but i think the fleetops style wont have them. im not really bothered either way.
if fleetops ever got point defence stuff i would again only want it for the sensor variant nebula, because it has a large sensor array to quickly calculate the correct way to shoot down the torps. and it would have to be a special weapon, using large amounts of energy.
the newton should be left alone, close to unarmed. only really capable of taking out fighters with its phaser.
the steamy should get a similar phaser in my opinion, but not point defence, it would be even more powerful then. plus for point defence you would need the ship to be in the middle of the battle to intercept torps, if the steamy were there, every ship would attack it. and one would never get a vet steamy

The FO Akira used to have cloaked PD Phasers. It was removed and seems to have been replaced by ECM that multiple Classes use.
