Supply gain should be proportional to the supply cost of the ship killed, as well as being affected by what ship you use to kill with (this way not only are Vor'chas, Taq B'rels, etc better at getting you supply, you're also rewarded for taking out the big targets that are harder to kill.) I'm thinking about one quarter of a ship's supply cost for a K'beajQ killing that ship, and around a third for a Vor'cha killing that ship.
The exact gain should be random, but with not too big of a possible range. This way going from expansion to expansion isn't quite as a good as fleet combat, since the random range will make some miners only give you 0 supply.
As for abuses: makes suiciding ships not viable, as you need them to actually kill things to get supply. And it means that kiting won't do you a whole lot of good.
And supply gain on capture sounds pretty cool too.
I like this but I'd change it to basing the supply gained off of the xp value of the killed ship.
Something like this: Supply = ((Target's xp worth) / (killer's xp worth)) * 10
Using this we'd get:
Vorcha kills: Miner = 2.8 Intrep = 5.8 vet Sov = 21.2
Ktinga kills: Miner = 8.5 Intrep = 17.4 vet Sov = 63.7
Obviously, the final multiplier could be changed for balance.

if such a calculation could be done it would be brilliant as it would truly represent huge honour of a ktinga killed a sovvie, but mediocre honour if a vorcha killed a sovvie. but the problem is who gets the final shot. you could have 5 sovvies do the hard work then bring in a kbq to finish the sovvie off for huge supply. which would be annoying.

Myles, people can do that now in order to rank up a certain ship but in the heat of battle their micro would have to be way above average to pull it off.

true but you only get the supply for 1 rankup, irrespective of whichever ship you kill. so a kvort killing a sovvie gets as much as a kvort killing an akira (provided they both rankup)

The security forces are just there to make sure no spies get on board (they don't always do a good job), make sure the rest of the crew isn't up to no good, and to coordinate defense.
The Tavara and the Cube are late-game ships that require significant techup, you're talking midgame stuff that only needs 1 (or 2, for Vutpa) research station(s).
Also, I'm pretty sure it would be OP to have every 1 Klingon take out 3 mining station crew. Say hello to four Taq'roja B'rels and their ability to get rid of your expansion entirely before your fleet comes back.
I didn't say to give every Klingon ship increased strength, I just meant specific ships that are designated as troopships. Elite Klingon warriors, etc. And a limited ship like the Vutpa refit wouldn't be overpowered if it had twice the boarding strength it has now. People hardly ever build Vutpa refits.
And the idea that every single crewman on a mining vessel is a soldier is ridiculous, even if they're on the front lines. They might have guns, but that doesn't mean a bunch of astrological engineers can be expected to take on experienced soldiers. Plus there is the fact that the carrier ship is aiming its big guns at your defenseless vessel and demanding your surrender. These aren't "onscreen" Federation crews, who if they're going to die, take down a minimum of 5 enemies. These are "offscreen" Federation crews, who took an auxiliary course at the academy and have never fired their guns in combat before.

I could see myslef supporting most of these ideas. Very fitting for the Klingons.

I like the idea of having a station that either increases the supply gain or has a passive supply trickle. But i think the station should be earlier in the tech tree than the mbearq (sp) station

Could still be a 0/1 building, the Intel Centre is way higher than Cloaking Generator for example.
