Interesting, very blocky in the engineering deck: I did really like the image from your first post

Thanks. :)

It's not meant to look all that blocky, just a bit.

I tried to reduce it a bit, some parts are just hull plating, not shape.

I guess it was just the perspective: I took a longer gander at some of the side shots, and it does look really perrrrty. I wonder if the Team will eventually put it in  :whistling:

I'm very up for this design going in as an "uncommon" unit - it's great! B)

After the "normal" model is finished, maybe submit it to A2files set up to go into the stock game. Then if you could make some different textures that conform to the FO standard (glowy nacelles, colour, etc.) I'm sure that would vastly speed up the process!

Sadly, as I said before in this thread I think, I do not currently possess the tools or the knowledge to make a working Armada II model from this.

Currently, it's nothing more than old pics and videos I did on a PC several generations older than my current one. Even if I could extract the data from the old hard-drive (I currently am not even sure where I put that one), the software probably wouldn't work with my current machine (nor would the dongle that was required as a copy protection mechanism). Also, the 3D model format used couldn't be exported to a usable format.

The only way for me to do a working model would be getting the right software and taking all the time to learn modelling from scratch (that Discovery is over 10 years old, I think, made with a pretty user friendly software with a nice GUI). I simply don't have the free time and energy to do this at the moment.

I'm rather happy though that my Corel Draw SE is still working. I hope to find the time to do the other 3 views with all the updates I imagined. But the fact that there is no fast way to get a 3D model together is saddening me a bit.

The only way to see this in game in the future would be someone who already has the knowledge and tools to make the model + texturing. Unfortunately...

your work is well done, but i think the ship design is ugly and too old. i just don

Its a sweet looking little bugger aint it.  You should release it on A2 files.  I would certainly use it

It is a very high quality ship either way

See my post above. There is nothing to release on A2 files, sorry. :(

Do you have a textured msd3 file, or 3ds or something?!? That would be cool.  I(along with others i'm sure)  know how to hard point, write odfs and I have the .sod converter.  The only thing I don't know how to do,(other than textureing and modeling) is making wireframes and build buttons.  You should just ask someone around here to help you.

Dammit, just beat you do it!    EDIT: See above post. Told you!
I'm sure someone'll be willing to do it - even if they can't model (properly) or texture (well) yet... (long summer coming up :P)

If I could dig out the old IDE hard drive... and if someone knew how to convert Neon 3D files to something usable... perhaps. ;)

No, currently I don't see a possibility to retrieve the data. It's really sad for me, as I tooled around with Neon 3D for years and all that's left are the old FLIs and FLCs, some stills and a few AVIs.

And that's not only the Discovery (and it's predecessor... which looked a bit like a TOS BoP :D).

It's a Warp shuttle, several Star Wars craft (Shuttle, Falcon, TIE, X-Wing, Star Destroyer)...

If that Neon 3D software would have been more standard, I'm sure I'd kept everything. But somehow it got lost during several hardware upgrades.

I just looked some of my Corel Draw files up and it seems the base design of the Discovery class is indeed from 1997. I did several improvements, but I think the last thing I did was texturing the saucer section... should have been no later than 1999.

It's like a blast from the past... you're proud you did something, but at the same time it's depressing you lost most of it. It's like someone died, somehow. :( Like killing Data and getting B4, really.

Edit:

I might have discovered something. If I find my old HDD, I might be able to retrieve the data in the future. I saw that there are indeed IDE to USB 2.0 adapters out there for under 10€. I may be getting one of those. If the HDD is not broken, that might be the solution to get the data back at least.

Darn, I can't seem to find ant converters for neon 3d files. ah well, cool ship any way.  would make a good warpin ship.

If i am feeling inclined to do so i might put together a maya version of this ship, or at least the best i can do of it. Im pretty busy right now and i only can really use a trial though, so no guarantees. It is a nice design though; good job!

Thank you again for the nice comments! :)

I'll try to get the other views ready as soon as possible (as a texture and modelling reference).

The overall tone should be clear looking at the top view. To get the shape right, try the demo video and the picture in this post: Star Trek Armada II: Fleet Operations - Discovery class - diplomatic escort / light cruiser

The version with the textures saucer section has some modifications to the 3d model that the older version in some parts of the video does not have, the screenshot from the Neon 3D object editor though is the latest one.

Look especially for the detailed look at the underside at 27 seconds in the video with the lower viewport, the deflector dish and the torpedo launcher. This is the only clear shot I have of it.

What I wanted to change is to put the Nacelles further up until there is a clear view of the bussard collectors when looking at the ship from the front.

If you really want to make a model of the ship, feel free to smoothen out areas that I have done poorly due to the missing functions and modelling options of the old software. There should be plenty of room for improvements without sacrificing the general idea of the design.

Awwww... You know, I really wanted to write:

"But what if B4 has a LASERBEAM attached to his head?!"

And then post a fully working A2 model.
Alas, miracles are not available on-demand...
