i think in stock A2 they may have changed it to "slower physics" or something. to tell you the truth, that really was more trouble than it was worth, half of nearly all of my fleets would end up scattered around the map cos they wondered off, "dog fighting" lol

If it's like director's cut in A1, you'll be able to turn it off, so quit complaining! ;)

I think it's a great idea!

Okay, with Director's cut on, the ships fly around each other while fighting. With it off, they just stand still.

----EDIT----

To Cpt Ryan: Okay, you don't like what it does to your formations. Some people do, so, since it can be turned off, why not keep it for those who want it?

ALSO with it on the ships tend to wander off after nearby enemy ships, even when they are going away from your fleet. particualy true with enemy scouts wandering around, your ships tend to chase after them. i remember one of my ships actually chased an enemy scout INTO a wormhole (i watched it to see how long it takes for it to break off its attack).

I like dogfighting.
Those static battles aren't that realistic... sometimes even annoying.
But actually I don't know what's worse? Sitting ducks or a single vessel of your fleet hunting your enemy back to his base and getting ripped apart there.
(Is there any relation between dogfighting and those suicide-one-ship-chases?)

Fortunately, you can set your ships to LOW MOVEMENT AUTONOMY in A2

----EDIT----

To theSeer: In A1, your ships were more likely to run off with director's cut on. Fortunately, we don't have to worry about that in A2. We don't have Director's cut, but they still do it! ;)
