I would have them just for guns, like the Cardassian defenses during the Chin'toka invasion during DS9. Of course resources and crew would come with them. It would make more sense having a colony ship that beamed things down instead of actually landing. I wouldn't mind having planets back with a few or all of these things
I said a few things too...

will there be defences (not just shields) on the planets? and can you assign them to players and they give a line of site?

good idea that would be great!

The thought if putting a shield around a planet thousands of miles circumference is laughable. The Phaser should do unless we can put ablative armor around a planet

Planetary Shielding. Laughable yes, but canon yes.
"Starfleet Dynamics" Tech Manual
Defence System Tier, circa 2285.
Maximum/Active (Terra)
As the home of the Human species, the Federation, and Starfleet Headquarters, it was recognised that Terra was a prime military target. As such, she has defences equaled be few other worlds.
- Planetary Force-field
- 500+ City Force-fields
- Orbital and Lunar Active/Defence Stations
- Interceptor Fleet
Maximum/Passive (Vulcan)
Reflecting an ancient heritage of non-violence, Vulcan leaders flatly rejected the concept of defence-through-force. They were convinced to accept purely passive defence only after an appeal from other Federation worlds.
- Planetary Force-field
- 250+ City Force-fields
- Orbital Passive/Defence Stations
Optimum/Active (Argelius)
Possessing only moderate economicand technological strengths, Argelius elected to utilise what active defences it could afford - manned by hired outworlders (mostly ex-marine veterans).
- 90+ City Force-fields
- Orbital Active/Defence Stations
Optimum/Passive (Colony 4)
Earth Colony 4, a pacifistic culture built by Buddhist Chinese and relatively resource-poor, chose an inexpensive, passive system.
- 37 City Force-fields
Minimum/Active (Zeta-9)
Only recently admitted to the Federation, Zeta-9 has only possessed spaceflight and nuclear power for a few decades. It chose to invest in a minimum, self-built active system.
- Interceptor Fleet
So as you can see, there are different ways to defend the planets. It seems planetary shielding is practical, but expensive.
If planetary shielding is brought back, perhaps different types could be used....?
PS: I just also read that said shielding (the planetary ones) are designed not to absorb weapons (although they can take on a few shots), theyre more designed to block transporters and sensors, to the enemy can't target. It has many generators on the equator.
The city force-fields are proper shields though, i think.

A simple no would have done...

Wrong again. Put simply, my post was a "yes" to the thread.
Try reading it next time, bud.

mh, i never thought there were planetary shieldings in star trek.
there won't be colonization in Fleet Operations. i really don't like the idea of shooting your crew on a wild planet ^_^
but many people requested to bring planets back to the game. i have some ideas to implement them along with the neutral stations for version 4.0 or later. let's see to it

what kind of planets can we look foward to in fo3? can we have nameable planets and planets which can be assigned to people, also will there be suns in fo3 i am getting fed up of using loads of red nebulars to make a fake sun (it works really well though!)
any ideas yet?
posted on June 13th, 2004, 9:52 pm
yep, till now i made 2 suns for version 3.0 - a red one and a "dead star" blue sun. there will be a few new planets to, but they will be the same as the beta 2 planets
