Most of the designs look like they just mushed together different parts from different ships and kind of just look wonky.
Another thing I took away is that apparently the greatest enemy to the Federation is the Exploratory Command division of Starfleet. Everytime there is an extended period of peace Exploratory Command syphons off resources and Starfleet get caught with their pants pulled down when conflict does arise because they focus to much on crappy exploration ships. If you are going to build exploration ships then just arm them to the teeth to begin with instead of repeating the same stupid "Oops! another enemy popped up and we aren't ready, better start retrofitting all of our ships"

Well, most new encounters with hostiles require some change in methodology to deal with. And most Federation ships do seem to be decently armed.

A fair few of the ASDB TMP-era designs look like they came from FASA's playbook of ugly Fed ships.

I like the Cantell and the Eximius. I've always liked the Adelaide since it appeared in ST: Legacy - even if it was misnamed. I'm a little sad that the Courageous they featured isn't the same Courageous that floats around BC, but that's okay.
I have to agree that some of the designs are a little "out there", but there were a lot of designs from the TOS-TLE eras,so it makes sense.

TOS-ships don't need to be really ugly. The old Connie had something to it.
However, the ASDB designs lack original ideas of designing starfleet-ships. They're all just kitbashes and copies.
The Eximus I described already

The Cantell looks like somebody at the yard was so bored he used the top-pylons of the Prometheus, the nacelles of a Sovereign-Prometheus-Hybrid, the New Orleans' primary hull and a saucer that's like from an Intrepid-model that got under a freakin' steamroller just to build something.
There seems to be no creativity at all at ASDB.

As ugly as this ship is I would still use it.........since it kills EVERYTHING!

Also, one of the commentors mentioned that this ship is supposed to end up being the Federation flagship in that Excalibur game that modders are making that someone posted about. If that is the case I hope that either the game is moddable so that I can instantly remove that hideous model or if that isn't possible I just hope they never finish their game.

The Excalibur-class itself isn't too bad (no kitbash and stuff) - it's just an old model. There is a better one with beautiful textures on filefront, named "federation dreadnought" instead of "Excalibur-class" and with different nacelles.

Didn't that fan-based game grind to a halt?

The game is entitled Star Trek: Excalibur, yes, and the main ship of the game is the Excalibur class. However, they are creating their own Excalibur class that's completely different from that Exalibur. So you have nothing to worry about, unless in the worst case scenario, their Excalibur is worse than that Excalibur (though I personally don't mind it, as it was a ship I used often in Millenium Project).

Nope, it's still going as far as I know. There haven't been many, if any updates in the past month, but it certainly not finished, if that's what you're asking. And for all I know, I'm not even a member of their forums, but hey, it gave me an awesome avatar picture, so there's that.

Wow another MP fan. It was fun to play back then.
Had some interesting features, but way too many super defensive structures.

Yeah, I played MP when I was really young, before I even played the original Armada, IIRC.
I have multiple Installs files for different versions and updates of MP somewhere on my computer, but I don't have the Armada disc anymore, so I can't play it. But Fleet Ops trumps all anyways, so I don't think I could get back into it that easily if I wanted to. Then again, I'll probably never know.

Thats kind of sad if this is the first time you've seen the Eximius. Thats ships been around since atleast the early Armada 1 days and you can find it for pretty much any game too. Not the best looking ship(DJ's own take on the ship makes it much more eye pleasing) but its firepower is pretty awesome.

Its firepower? Any modded ship can have amazing firepower.

When it's about firepower, try this one:

I proposed this vessel in a scaled down version for high end Federation in FO.

I remember that game. It's a shame I couldn't get it to run under WIndows 7 though.
I wasn't big on the design of the ship and the whole microtorpedoe thing just seemed silly. That just mean you had to carry two different kinds of torpedoes. You would be better off just having a smaller number of quantum torpedoes arranged like that to save on storage.
