You feel like a battlecruiser is too weak or a race too strong? Go ahead and discuss it here :)

And now the idea of a small arms on artillery ships in general.

And talking about providing a small self defense gun to Dominion Hyperspace Artillery isn't talking about Dominion Hyperspace Artillery? :P

Yes it is, but someone brought up the Steamrunner. Which I happen to think is perfectly fine the way it is.

It was an example... To show that an artillery ship can have a normal weapon without becoming a 'conventional weapon super-ship' like you seem to believe it must become.

Errrr.... Okay, I'm lost in this conversation, where is it going? ???

Well, both the Steamrunner and the DHA share the same problem: they are supposed to flee if attacked, but they cannot outrun any pursuer (besides a Klingon builder, may be) and they don't have teeth to do some damage while they are being torn to pieces. In the case of the DHA is worse because they cannot shoot while running.

I've seen Steamrunners shooting the artillery while fleeing, and, contrary to the Serkas, as it doesn't have a blast radius, it can shoot quite close without damage to itself.

I don't want to find out what would happen if you tried to shoot the hyperspace gun at your own position, but I suspect you wouldn't like the results. :)

I'd call that quite an understatement...

That is why again and again I propose that we give a short range poleron beam. So it will at least have some 'baby teeth' rather than no teeth at all. :pinch:

Please point out exactly where I led you to believe that adding an auxiliary weapon would result in a "conventional weapon super-ship"......

I also provided a 'real world' example. If you had read my post, that actually supports your argument.

I must have misunderstood.

I think most of us agree that DHA should have at least some rudimentary form of 'anti-ship' weapon auxiliary to the "Big Enchilada". I guess how much firepower and what type is the heart of the debate... I agree with Gamer. A low to medium yield polaron beam seems like the dominion thing to do.

I think, in addition that some form of energy re-routing should be available where the yield of the polaron beam would be increased temporarily, at the expense of firing the main weapon. You know,, just in case the S really hits the fan...

To give credit where credit is due... something like Tyler's auxiliary phaser on his Steamrunner.

It doesn't even need to be as "big" as the bug's gun, in terms of firepower, but taking into account that an artillery unit should have superior telemetry and targeting systems, it could have "artillery" range. To discourage pursuit.

Either the romulan as the federation artillery are in most cases useless. You can inflict the same damage in the same time with a destroyer and have more defense and you can run away. As for the name "artillery" they both dont suit that prupose.

The steamrunner fired its weapons and a direct hit with this weapon to an already shieldsless destroyer didnt destroyed him. A direct hit with an artillery-weapon against a destroyer!!! And he flys away as nothing has happended.

So, I send an intrepid and are better on with it.
And... the only purpose for the steamrunner is to bombard enemy turret platforms. But this is only possible if you already destroyed the enemy fleet. So... useless.

When I think about an artillery, I think about vessels stating with an offensive value of 50 and a defensive value from around 20 to 25. The romulan one can cloak and the siltent resolve could THEN be effective... the first time.

Up until now the shield breaking torp from the B'rel is more effective.

So the steamrunner should get:
attack: 50
def: 25
system: 15

Romulan one:
attack 50
def: 20 (it can cloak and through that evade)
system: 16

The bad thing on the steamrunner is that this ship is not effective against enemy ships. But against enemy installations I use the Exelsior MK II - artillery range and shred the enemy turret in pieces.
And pleas dont tell the federation is overpowered. You just have to use the cloak right. Only the romulan turrets are a little bit too weak in my eyes.
