I don't think the Sabre would become a no brainer if it supported a larger variety of ships. It would still have it's negative aspects. I'd find it interesting to have a Sabre similar to the peripheral Scube: a Sabre that wouldn't be terrifying stat wise, but it's supporting role could get nasty for the enemy. Supporting role meaning on the one hand what Myles mentioned with torp avoidance, speed, 360degree long range fire, on the other hand also an improved cover fire ability.
@Nerd: In FO not every ship that is used rarely is useless. Take the Klingon Vutpa for example. It's not used very often, but there are situations where it can become a match winner(Sang/E2 spam...). In those situations one often finds out that one should build these beasts much more often. But then there is this weapon depot issue...;)

I think Saber (And Monsoon) should get a restricted firing arc.
May be I'm blind, but I never saw aft phasers on both. In exchange I'd say defense + 1 and offensive + 1 or something.

Hmm.  Playing with the firing arcs a little would be interesting.  Perhaps in the redo this can be considered, since pretty much every Fed ship can fire something backwards save the Defiant.  That would add a little more variety and decision perhaps.

I still think the way chassis are done and how warp in is pretty easy to access is why we don't see much more than intrepids and monsoons.  It's just really easy to go that route and stay there.

the defiant fires backwards too :( its a godship even in canon. i dont think it should fire backwards, but we have seen it fire both torps and phasers backwards.

it was silly, the defiant was added to give ds9 something more than runabouts to deal with a new threat, as it makes no sense for ds9 to only have beefed up shuttles. instead they gave ds9 the starship equivalent of the angel of death. the defiant was a flying death machine. it was way more than necessary. something in the middle would have been better, they would sometimes get their arses kicked, and sometimes kick arse. with the defiant, sisko was always on the supply side of the beatings.

I was meaning in game.  Pretty sure the game unit only fires forward pulse phasers and the rank up torps fire forwards.  I did just snort some coke lines while I had body sushi for lunch, so maybe I'm wrong. :hungry:

When you're having body sushi, you don't really know what you're talking about. :wheelchair:

Iv used the saber to win quite a few games but talking about limiting its firing arc is just dumb, it is already a very limited use ship so to limit its arc will just reduce the number of reasons to build it.

Its an early ship and is only effective in early game, later you would be stabbing your self in the foot wasting time building such a weak ship when your oponents are churning out larger more powerful ships.

actually for the entire game if the enemy has a lot of torp heavy ships (sovvie for example, so this applies a lot to later games), then a small number of dirt cheap sabres can be of great use, e2/intrep/akira (depending on the exact situation) can be your primary damage dealer, but those are all medium size and take punishment from torps. while the dirt cheap sabre in small numbers (maybe keep 3-5 in your fleet) will force the enemy to waste firepower with torp misses (over half miss against hyper impulse sabres, which sometimes cause cover fire as well :D ). the sabres will likely die. but it will take more than 1 volley to get the kill. while the same fleet will kill an intrep in a similar amount of time (cos its sturdier, but absorbs torps), but the sabre is a lot cheaper and not a big loss, while the intrep is more important. force the enemy to spend time shooting something cheap and wasting some dps.
