That's because no-cd patches aren't technically legal.

no cd cracks are pirated versions of a legitimate executable modified WITHOUT the permission of the creator in question, there is no technicality about it, it is 100% illegal.

even so, this game requires the CD or the original EXE to even install, a NO-CD would be useless.

... and they cause a version mismatch error in multiplayer. :whistling:

They can also disable features in some games.

If I'm not mistaken, you can do whatever you want with anything installed on your hard drive if you've paid for it; you just can't always distribute it. It's sort of a grey area. It would really come down to what was in the EULA for the program, whether or not the copyright has expired, and whether or not you have permission from somebody qualified to give it to you. Intellectual property laws also vary from country to country, making it even harder to figure out. Generally, forums just delete any topic about them.

Aye, it's a grey area alright. I tend to steer clear of cracks and things myself, but then, I do like having a physical CD with all the A2 printing and such like :).

Cabal, is your name and pic from a game called Warzone 2100? I had that on my Playstation many ages ago :D

you're right! but so am I :O. check out Warzone 2100's "Cabal"... The resemblance is striking. Coincidentally, that game is available as an open source program! May have to dl it...

that one your thinking of phoenix is called NEXUS. if your unlucky enough at gamma side some of your units turn will against you..

most games are made in the USA, cabal. there is usually a small print in the main menu of multiplayer login or some other area. copyright lasts until the game maker decides its of no value any longer, copy protection on the other hand, is not a grey area and last just as long as copyright.

will blizzard/activision ever release A2 as GNU? and who would get the game? thats a doozy.

What you do is make a back up of your cd using a disk imaging program, which is legal in the US. You then mount that image with Daemon Tools and put your disk someplace safe.

i dont use daemon tools if i want to create virtual drive, that software has a hidden virus attached to it. a backup disk is legal only if you have the original as well, if you say you created a backup disk and no proof you own the original then, its not legal. even if you have a backup and the original, the cops could argue that you intend to copy this disc and send on more copies to your friends; that is a grey area. but blatent no cd crack or downloading games that were illgally used especially if it was done of purpose. take a guess what happens next?  :whistling:.
