I'm working on a small mod where you can build ships like the Nebula Class, and have a specific tech requirement in order to be built. So I added the ships I want to build (like the Nebula) to the Eraudi Yards. I can build the vessel at tech 0, but if I add buildable after x starship chassis level, the ship won't build.

For example, let's say I want the Nebula-Yoyodyne type buildable at starship chassis level 1. So in the techtree I put fed_nebula_torpA.odf 1 fedU_chassis1.odf. Then when I research starship chassis level 1 at SF Engineering, the Nebula still appears as a red wireframe in the starship build queue and I can't build it.

What else do I need to do in order to make it work?

hm, the tooltip should tell you why you can't build it

That should be all that is required... I assume that you made sure you are testing the right avatar, since there are two Chassis researches?

Yeah, it tells me I need starship chassis level 1, but it can't be built even after researching it. Are you saying it should be telling me something else then?

Dom, I didn't test with Avatar since warp-in vessels like Nebula don't use Avatars. I simply used the fedU_chassis1.odf, no Y or Z.

Hm, each chassis is linked to an avatar - in this case fedU_chassis1.odf is linked to Mayson, so you must test with Mayson unless you changed other things as well :)

Ok, it's working for Mason. So far so good, now I need to make a Y copy and test it with Risner.

Just copy the techtree line and add a Y in the chassis in the copied line.  It should work fine.

Example:
Code: Select all
fed_nebula_engA.odf 1 fed_chassis1.odf
fed_nebula_engA.odf 1 fed_chassis1Y.odf

This should work.

When I copy the line and add Y to the chassis it causes the game to freeze when I launch Instant Action. I think I am going to have to make Y variants for it to work right.

But what odfs should I duplicate for the Y variants? For example, you have fed_nebula_torp.odf and fed_nebula_torpA.odf. Does it matter?

All that is needed is to add the Y - the freeze is because you've incorrectly formatted your Techtree file.

If you really want to do the duplication, duplicate the vessels with the "A" suffix.

you actually have to do the duplication if you want to have the same vessel buildable with techtree requirements from different avatars

Thx Chapman. I do plan to do the duplication but since I haven't had much practice with this stuff yet,  I'm starting with the basics. I want to make sure the little things work first before I go crazy editing everything only to find it won't work later.

The new modding system including the FPQedit is a great help so far. It's made things so much easier. Thx to the FO team. I'm going to make it so the Mckinley complex vessels have separate bonuses for each Avatar.
