So A couple days ago I installed both fleet ops and the multimedia pack, yet aramda looks stock, the cardies didn't put up much resistance (maybe next time I should try borg?) it was set on medium. I saw nothing new ingame...did the fleet ops install not take? I installed the game, the official patch, that other patch I was told about 1.2.3 or whatever it is and then fleet ops....pretty much looked stock to me and the AI musta been broken cuz I've never wiped out a base after 2 hrs of play with 1 group of sovs and a single time-distorion event....at least I learned how to play again...

ok you was playing a2 as fo doesnt have cardassians so how did you install fo was it over your a2 directory or to its default directory
to play fo you either need to go to <game dir> and run FleetOps.exe or <game dir>/data and run Armada2.exe for example
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations\FleetOps.exe
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations \Data\Armada2.exe
C:\Program Files\Activision\Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations\FleetOps.exe
C:\Program Files\Activision\Star Trek Armada II Fleet Operations \Data\Armada2.exe
were armada2 you just go to something like
C:\Program Files (x86)\Activision\Star Trek Armada II\Armada2.exe

I started the game with the shortcut on the desktop. I installed it over the game directory so far as i know it should have applied it to the game but I will recheck.

Install it to a new directory instead. FO is essentially standalone and really just needs a location to pull a few files from.

yea I put it back in, just to be safe.

Ok, works now that I understand how it's done. Seems a lot harder to capture enemy ships as borg though.
Face with the 2 choices, I am curious what the benefits are of one over the other. I took the right choice. I did manage to capture the large valdor styled command vessel (the one you can have only 2 of) but with no shipyard and construction ships not having tractor beams getting it out of enemy reach was hard. Never did get to use it, but did capture it. Maybe I should have built more assimilators. borg shipyard management is annoyingly clumsy with 1 ship per yard thingy, I like to just be able to click a crapload of what I want and go off on the map to make a run at the enemy base while more ships get built. nearly got a rom con ship..woulda loved to build a borg romulan base but the others beam crew over making it hard and the ship blew so no luck there.
For dominion I chose pure tech, what does the other one do? Just breen? Do you get cardassians that way? can you still produce gem hadar? Be nice to see hidiki galor and keldon at least.

sorry to disappoint you but capturing a construction ship as borg only lets you build a repair only yard to repair none borg ships. playing as all the other races lets you build a "mix tech yard" which will let you build a few ships with different abilities. (depending on what race you capture depends on what you can build (so playing as as fed, if you capture all 4 other races, each construction ship gives you different ships.)
recommend as dominion capturing a fed or romulan con ship you will enjoy seeing what you get to build there!. as feds capture dominion as you get to build a rare type of ship. also as fed, a romulan con ship gives you defiants that can cloak.
if you want to read up on some of the stuuf you can do this guide should help http://guide.fleetops.net/
list of all ships factions can build http://guide.fleetops.net/database
here you will find more info on mix tech ships http://guide.fleetops.net/guide/strategy

ahh that sucks... back in A1 if you got a con ship you could build their whole tree I think, not sure about A2 stock. As borg, when I capture, say, a warbird, is there a way I can repair it? It seems when a ship is rendered crewless, even for a second, the engines go down and need to be repaired for a while before the ship can move, you can't just get it on the borg side using holding beams and then fly off, and the borg don't seem to have any sort of tractor beam equipped vessels to drag disabled stuff off, and I can't use the repair order either, I need to manually recrew it...or am I missing something?. Also, can you attack and assimilate or capture (as any other race) the ferengi ships? I tried to chase one down hauling off a borg scout but couldn't catch it. Seemed like it wouldn't fire on it. Also, it seems as if there are no sensor or weapons turrets for borg? Do they have the cloak detection ability?
Capturing con ships usually means I need to hit their bases, take out their starbase and turrets and usually by then they have no ships left so there's no point, and the amount of multitarget weapons also make this difficult. (though I am playing with unlimited resources so they are not sending out ships to build mining stations at distances)
Speaking of resources, I know you can set it to unlimited...but back in A1 unlimited was simply moons that didn't deplete, you still had to collect. If I don't choose unlimited here in fleet ops, so I must actually collect stuff, do the moons/latinum clouds/ and what was the other thing? mining planets? do they run out?
All in all I find A2 to be rather cumbersome to play, not a diss on your mod or anything, just the game, but then all I did was the single player campaign and shelve it so maybe I am just out of practice. I am going to keep messing with it. Those tac cubes look kick ass. I didn't build any spheres but do they come in tac armor too? About the only thing I can recommend to fleet ops on the borg in the future is tractor beams to haul off disabled ships friendly or otherwise and some time of assimilation station that lets you tend to vessels you've captured...and lastly, the armada 1 stock starbase, maybe spruced up with some tac armor or something..the A1 starbase for borg is a good design and I was sad to see it was replaced with the garbage that came with A2.
By the way, are there any other mods out there that change the game extensively like fleet ops does? I might want to try some other ones, assuming the community produced any...I never fallowed armada modding after A2, as I went to Bridge commander.

You could try assimilating a yard to repair a captured ship with. I'm not sure the AI builds many yards outside of the main base, though. You could also just beam crew onboard until it's at capacity.
All resource points in FO are infinite regardless of setting. Unlimited resources strictly means that you have an infinite pool of dilithium, tritanium, etc.
Only Cubes get tactical armor, to my knowledge.
I'd recommend trying out a different faction. The Borg are strange. The Federation would probably be the most familiar.
There are a variety of A2 mods, but most people are having a hard time getting stock A2 to run on modern systems. It's unlikely that any of them will change the game quite as extensively as FO since FO actually patches and upgrades the engine. If you want them, most are archived here.
There are also mods for FO. FO supports a modification module system so most are installed by adding them to [FO directory]\Data\Mods. To run it, you would start FO, to to Options, Mods Settings, and pick the one you want. Most of them can be found here. Sigma is probably the most popular and comprehensive, being a total conversion in an entirely new setting.

Cool, I'll check those out.
Are you saying, about compatibility, that the unofficial patch I got from here and some of the other major mods wouldn't work together? That they need to be installed on stock aramda 2 with the official patch only?
I am going to stick with Fleet ops for now, play it a little more and get more familiar with how to use the tech. As for assimilating stations, I tried but they seem to be able to recrew even with several cubes beaming faster than I can deal with it and then trying to destroy the turrets without multi-targeting other stuff...controls for A2 in terms of managing a ship or 2 or 3 seems to be more cumbersome, which is why I shelved A2 to begin with. Maybe i need to try a different setting or make the AI mine so I have a chance to capture stuff or so they will build a starbase somewhere else. Otherwise the minute I get that one starbase they have it shuts them down.
I might try klingons next.
Is the fleet ops team still going and actively modding?

The unofficial patch operates on the EXE and DLLs so it should be compatible with anything.
The FO team has stopped working on 3.X and 4.0 in favor of switching to a newer engine that's still in development. The team gives periodic updates, but doesn't set release dates.

Ok, the other question I wanted to ask is what are the artilary ships for dominion? Do the borg have them? It used to be streamrunner for feds and raptors for romulans in the first armada, not sure what romulan ships have been hitting me with long range as I've never seen them fire, just the results..

The Romulan Serkas is an artillery ship.
The Dominion have the massive Hyperspace Artillery.
There are a few other ships that are long range and high damage, but those are the only ones with area damage.

how does the hypserspace artilary work? I was too busy fending off romulan ships and trying to out build them to focus on all the new tech...

I think it may be a special weapon. I don't play Dominion much.
